Unhappy Noob stuck with a downgraded ROM

OK... I know I am going to get a rash of s*&t over this but I could really use some help. I'm sure that the answer that I'm looking for is somewhere around the forum but I'm a single dad with two very young children, 4 and 16 months, and don't have much free time to search through all the threads.
I thought I would be cool and upgrade to one of the custom roms, No2chem. I first tried downloading the rom update from the FTP site but the file was corrupted. I then thought I could use PPC kitchen. I ran olipro unlocker and ended up getting stuck in the boot screen. Then I ran the .exe that fixes that and got "no radio" at the bottom of the screen. My final solution was to flash back to the old 2.17 rom which gave me a working device but I am now stuck with a downgraded ROM. Everytime I try to run the RUU for the new Sprint ROM it flakes out at 11 percent.
Like I said, I know the answer is around here somewhere but I have a baby trying to crawl over my laptop as I type this. Any help at all would be greatly appreciate as I know everyone spends a lot of their own time and effort learning these things on their own but I did put as much effort as time would allow into fixing it myself.

Thanks in advance,
Yamus

Re: Noob stuck with a downgraded ROM

Try this:

Hard Reset you device.
Turn the phone on it bootloader mode. (Camera + Power + reset)
Connect Phone to your PC
Load the Sprint Rom

Often times if you start off in bootloader mode already, it resolves a lot of problems that people have.

Re: Noob stuck with a downgraded ROM

Couple of ideas for you:

- you're getting the communication error... are you using pc or mac? I tried using windows through parallels on a mac, and had a heck of a time, so I always only use a pc now. Also, I've heard vista has issues (beyond my scope).

- If it won't even start ruu, maybe you have a corrupt file. Try downloading the rom again. You are trying the official sprint rom, right? That way you get the new radio, etc. That is the correct first step. I think that's what you said you are doing, but just want to make sure.

- about the 11% thing. How long did you let it run? I've upgraded 2 phones now, and both of them hung at 11% for a while, but eventually picked up again. Just let it sit for a while and see what happens.

- Are you unlocked??? I guess that should have been my first question. If you are not unlocked, you will get nowhere. That is step #1. Here is the thread for the unlocker: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=9093 Unlocking will not change your rom, it just allows you to put other roms on. It works through ruu, but in the end your phone will boot back into the old rom, as if nothing changed. Then, once you are fully unlocked, you run the sprint upgrade, then you run a custom rom (such as no2chem, like you said).

If nothing here helps, give us some more details, and tell us how these recommendations failed.

Re: Noob stuck with a downgraded ROM

I just re-read your first post. It looks like the unlocker didn't work the first time. The unlocker has a few steps, and you must follow the instructions exactly. I know the first time I tried to unlock, I didn't follow through completely, and I got stuck in bootloader (tri-color screen). Took me a while to realize I didn't let the full unlocker run. Your phone will have the bootloader version like it's unlocked, but you still have to let the unlocker finish on your computer, it will go through the ruu and show the progress bar on the phone and everything. I think you should be absolutely sure you are properly unlocked. I'm guessing that could very well be your problem.

Glad I could help. I'm actually new to this side of the pond. Only recently have I felt comfortable enough with what I'm doing to offer advice. I honestly don't know about the thanking thing, looks like you or I need 50 posts for that.
