How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

Here are the steps I have successfully used many times to upgrade my xv6800 to the new radio and a custom ROM.

1) For good measure, perform a hard reset by holding down the 2 softkeys while pressing the reset button then press R
2) Just in case record your MSID, MDN, and if you can see it A Key from the PST. You can get there by dialing ##778 Send and using 000000 as your code (I've never been able to see my A Key)
3) Install Olipro 2.4 bootloader (during installation of the bootloader, after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from your phone, the RUU instructs you to make sure you have an ActiveSync connection. Ignore this, it is not necessary.)
*When complete be sure to disable USB in ActiveSync to get out of the bootloader (File -> Connection Settings -> Uncheck "Allow USB connections") Re-enable this before the next step
4) Install the new Sprint ROM
*DO NOT LET THE SPRINT CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN!!! When the flash is complete and you arrive at the Welcome screen it will ask you to tap the screen to proceed, DO NOT PROCEED ANY FURTHER. If using DCDs kitchen you can proceed to flash from here. I can't speak for others although I believe they will do the same.
5) Finally, install the custom ROM of your choice. I am successfully using DCDs 3.0.1 without any issues.

Things to note:
1) I never let the Sprint ROM boot up and run the customizations
2) I had the slow signal aquisition issue so ran *22802 then hit End as soon as it connected
3) I also re-entered the MSID and MDN
4) After performing steps 2-3 I no longer have the slow signal issue
5) No A key was necessary
6) I never had to run *228 to OTA program (in the past programming with *228 has reversed the effect of re-entering the MSID and MDN)

The theory is that the Stock Sprint updater copies your PST settings out before the install then restores them post-install. This is why I never needed to dial *228 or re-enter my A Key

GPS is running great
Not sure about Rev A, still need to tether and test

If you have suggestions on ways to improve this guide, please let me know.

First of all I would like to say thank you from all of us XV6800 guys

Just have a couple of questions...
"*When complete be sure to disable USB in ActiveSync do get out of the bootloader"
Did you mean to get out of the bootloader?
Im guessing this a easily accessible setting in activesync? (Im at work)
Also when you stated...
"*DO NOT LET THE SPRINT CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN!!! When the flash is complete and you arrive at the Welcome screen, DO NOT PROCEED ANY FURTHER."
How do I stop it at that point?

Those are about the only questions I have. This post is great. I am very excited now to give this a shot.
Thanks so much Geckotek

What do I do if Im not tapping the screen? it says, "DO NOT PROCEED ANY FURTHER." Does that mean I get out of it somehow?
Thanks a lot, you are awsome!

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

It means soft reset before the customizations run. I think you have to wait until the WELCOME wizard has completed, but I am not sure.

To be safe: When the screen says "Your device will customize in 3...2..." then RESET (soft reset, pinhole method) before the countdown ends

BrandonXV6800 03-13-2008 12:16 PM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

Okay so...

To perform a soft reset, you just press a pin in the pinhole under the phone. No need to hold it in, im assuming?

and to....

Perform a hard reset, you press and hold both soft keys and then
press and hold the reset button until a screen comes up asking if you
want to perform a full reset. Press 'R' to reset. Then press <spacebar>.

Is this correct? Just making sure. Man, I am defiantly donating to this site. the support is amazing!
Thanks,
Brandon

Actually, you can just leave it on the welcome screen or manually put it into bootloader and move forward with flashing the ROM of your choice.

When it's on the welcome screen, it is connected via AS. I can't speak for other custom ROMs, but DCDs kitchen will take it from there an boot it up to the bootloader.

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

Okay, so I'll manually put it into boot loader. I would like to then load DCDs 3.0.1. Do I have to use a RUU or is this an exe and will boot okay on its own?
Thanks,
Brandon

DCDs kitchen has it's own RUU that it will kick off.

See the attached directions someone else wrote. (would give credit, but too sick and impatient to look up where I got this)

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

Is this the boot loader I need?

Hard-SPL-240-MFG.exe
I got this download from here.
http://www.phonenews.com/sprint-htc-...do-rev-a-2876/

When I click the link on the post it doesn't work. So I searched for it and found this. Is it right?

I cant find a mirror of the boot loader. I click the link to get it from the xda site, login, and click the link to download it and it says I don't have access. Who knows.

Last question, I promise. I hear of some people having problems with things transferring from Vista. Will I be able to load this stuff onto my phone using Windows Mobile Device Center for Vista?

So is the one above boot loader Oli's 2.4? Could someone link me to a working link?
Thanks in advance,
Brandon

That looks like it. In my initial post there is a link to the bootloader and instructions. Edit: looks like his link still has the user/pass in it. Pressing cancel continues to the download.

Here is the direct link from that post:
ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Titan/Users/Im...rd-SPL-MFG.exe

I don't have answers to the Vista question, you might want to make sure you look around on that as well.

Those of you who have gotten your aGPS to work on the XV6800, can you please see if you can get in via QPST on the phone and read the Service Programming info. I'm interested to know what's on the gpsOne screen in terms of PDE IP and Port. Thanks in advance people.

Thank you for taking the time and posting the instructions to upgrade to new sprint rom. My question is on step 4 after flashing the sprint rom is necessary to put flash dcd kitchen or can i go directly to dcd's 3.0.1

Step #4 is very important. DCDs RO does not include the radio. I do not suggest flasing the radio seperately either since the stand-alone radio does not copy and restore your PST settings. In fact, DCD said earlier today he was taking it down.

So you're saying to make sure to install the kitchen and not the single rom right? Just making sure:).

I'm saying you must A) Install the Sprint ROM then B) install a custom ROM of your choice (DCDs kitchen, No2Chem, etc...)

Edit: yes, the DCD kitchen which is the OS ROM.

hey all this has been a good read, has anyone succesfully done this by using Geckoteks directions? wanted to hear peoples feed back before I tried this this weekend.

Also one question I have is what would be the best way to back everything up incase i screw it up?

Thanks in advance.

This is a terrific thread that should definately be a sticky.

Sometimes I feel like a second-rate citizen with all the Sprint folk up on their perches while Verizon users fight for the table scraps that manage to fall down. (kidding... sort of)

I came so close a few times thinking I will try to flash Sprints ROM blindly and see what happens. Now I'm glad I didn't.

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

Yes, I upgraded my VZ with Geckotech's help on the original "Sprinty" update thread. :) Worked great!!!

Thanks for putting this together, Gecko. I did figure out the "Marty" reference- I kept getting stuck on the godawful Huey Lewis song....

One question for my VZ bretheren- my programming pushes now require a "#" at the end, just like the Sprintys. e.g. ##778# . Almost tripped me up when I had to call VZ after hard reset to get re-activated- he said "hit ##778". Nothing happened. Quickly thought to add the extra "#" , though, as I had read in the Sprint threads. Anyhow, I *think* what I need to do to set this back is edit the registry- I found a 'postfix' value of "#" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\PhoneExt\Keyprogram . I think I can just backspace over this value to get it to work like VZ again. Can somebody validate that this value is blank for VZ?? TANKS!

Oh yeah, one other thing- the poster blazingwolf was VZ-izing No2Chem's ROM updates... I guess he was doing things like putting the VZ splash screen back in instead of the Sprint one....but he seems to have stopped...anybody have any idea how we can go back and VZ-ize our hacked ROMs?? It even tells me I'm connecting to the Sprint data network....not a huge deal, but just wondering....

Thanks again Gecko!!!

Geckotek 03-14-2008 11:42 PM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

That's odd that you have to dial the #. Do you press ##778# then send? Did you make sure to skip the Sprint customizations? Sorry, I don't have an answer on the registry key, perhaps someone else will. My guess would be that it's reversible. Heck, you can always reflash your ROM! LOL

I personally enjoy the original HTC splash used in DCDs ROM.

Does your phone currently tell you it's connecting to the Sprint data network or is that a theoretical outcome?

buckyswider 03-15-2008 12:04 AM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

I dial ##778# and it goes to EPST. No 'send'.

It *does* tell me I'm connecting to Sprint. That would be funny, wouldn't it??? I'd slingbox all I want and VZ wouldn't care :headbang: And up until right now my PIE home page was the Sprint Powerdeck page.

I did reset prior to the Sprint customizations when loading the Sprint ROM. 3 seconds....not a lot of notice!! I pushed reset not knowing what to do at the time....I guess that was correct...

There was a corresponding 'customization' countdown when I loaded the No2Chem ROM. I let that one run. Possibly I shouldn't have.....?

Geckotek 03-15-2008 12:11 AM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

I'm not sure, I'm not as well versed in No2Chem's ROM. Sorry, can't help you there. But I'm thinking that something about No2Chem's ROM is what "Sprintized" your phone.

Is the unlock to get into your PST still 000000?

Perhaps I'll load a No2Chem ROM to learn more about it, but I'm looking for a new job so I can't deal with too much downtime on my phone.

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

sorry again for the newbie question in advance. I am really caught up on the custom roms. Am I able to follow your steps and get the gps working but not update to No2Chem or DCD's roms.

If those roms are of big benefit I definately would try them out but really havent read up on the roms yet, and the problems i might face. Thanks again for your help.

What part of trying to install a cutom ROM fails? What steps are you taking?

kcmoney13 03-15-2008 09:23 AM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

sorry i think i worded that a little wrong. I guess you could say I am a little worried about updating to DCD's custom rom. Mainly because I have been reading about certain features not working. Do you think there is a large benefit for updating to DCD custom rom? Or should I just stay with the stock rom but to the sprint rom update so I can get the gps to work?

Or if I am not making any sense you can just smack me haha. Man I have a computer science degree you think i could figure this out haha

Geckotek 03-15-2008 09:37 AM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

I am personally having no issues w/ DCDs ROM. I think most ppl are issue free. The good news is that you've gotten past the hard parts and now you can flash ROMs and test them all you want. If you discover an issue, you can reflash at any time.

Personally, I like DCDs ROM because of some appearance changes, removing programs I don't need, adding some programs I do need/want (all in ROM.) Also, he includes the carrier specific packages. But if you're not experiencing any issues, then I guess there's no need.

gecko thanks for the quick replys. I think I am going to try it out today. one more question I was reading a little bit about the DCD rom earlier and it said something about formatting your sd card to fat 32 and installing from there. Does that still need to happen or was that with an old build. Or is it like OLIPRO that just allows me to connect via active snyc

Alright I am caught up in the Olipro step. for some reason I am getting hung up in the boot loader screen. The one with the colors on it. When the dos prompt comes up and asks me to disconnect the usb and plug it back in. Which way are you disconnecting? By unplugging the cord. or disconnecting and reconnecting in active sync? Also when it is complete does the phone just reboot?

Geckotek 03-15-2008 10:41 AM

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

Unplugging the cord from the phone. Then it will load the bootloader.

When the bootloader is complete, you can turn off USB in ActiveSync and the bootloader program will trigger the reboot. Then turn USB back on in AS.

Re: How to upgrade an xv6800 with the new Sprint ROM

well as soon as i unplug the cord from the phone, I am disconnected from activesync. But when i plug the cord back in I can hear the phone connect in windows but it will not connect back up in ActiveSync. When the next screen pops up it asks me to establish an active sync connection. Then click next.

It will let me move forward and upgrade and it says to establish a connection with activesync. I cannot connect to the phone and the phone looks as it is stuck in bootloader. What do you think is up?

Ignore that stupid direction that says to connect to AS. It is wrong. The phone is connected to the PC and the RUU sees it and will continue.

I added a disclaimer to step 3. Please let me know if this sounds right (doing this from memory.)

alright thanks for the correction I have made it past that part and have loaded the sprint rom and did a soft reboot when it said update in 3... 2... REBOOT.

Now i am trying to install DCD Kitchen but am having problems running the BuildNB.bat file. It will run but comes up and gives me an error " could not find c:\kitchen\buildpkg.wrn "could not fine file name specified"
Then says it cannot find romupdateutility.exe

Can you please help me out. Thanks I appologize it just seems to be giving me lots of hiccups.

**EDIT I think I may have figured it out. I didnt have C++ intalled I am going to try that now!

You'll need to call Verizon and have them give you a new AKEY. (Don't ask for an AKEY, though-just say you did a hard reset and act dumb- they'll walk you through it). I recorded my AKEY in case I ever need it again. There's a thread on this somewhere in here.....
