Fix for the internet lag and internet is fast. Works for me but will it work for you?
1 Attachment(s)
So I was playing around and pissed because I could not sync one of my programs do to data packets dropping like mad on my phone. I went into with resco registry editior and changed HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms and changed the TimerWheelSize to Value of 5 and soft reset via software reset. (Like Psshutxp) Now the phone is off the hook and netfront is super smokin' fast as well as my company programs syncs now. Give it a shot and let me know your results. Attached is a resco registry file to make it easy to import reg settings.
******Update******* After flashing many times last night, it seems the fix points to the changing of the DNS servers that is making the difference. I have some at XDA say they did not change the DNS but did change TimerWheelSize to 5 and their speed went from 600k to 1300k. This is not a solution for the internet disconnecting on its own. Its for speed! Below are Level 3 DNS servers which I find to be the quickest on the net. I also changed my dns settings to the following: (Super Low Latency) 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2 If your data connection comes up and asks for username password, leave it blank and checkmark save password... |
AMAZING!!!!!
I cannot believe how fast this is, I'm dumbfounded... It couldn't get any faster. No lag or lag lock, esp with Engadget. |
Terrific. Pages load extremely fast on Netfront. A great find mikee4fun...
Btw, test web browsing capability while on voice call... |

I installed the registry edit while I was on a BT call. I then clicked my IE (shortcutted to Netfront) and I browsed several pages while connected on a voice call. And theses pages were fresh meaning I had never browsed them before, therefore avoiding cookies from past sites...
I did encounter a IOTA error from Sprint (although I am with Alltel) since introducing this registry edit. I am running no2chems 5046 rom (Sprint based) with 3.27 radio, etc... but nonetheless great work mikee4fun! |
Thank you for sharing the info! Works great! For some reason or the other when ever I go back into settings the DNS server ip's I entered are not checked and the default is selected. What gives?
|
WOW!
It LITERALLY takes less than a second before the page is connected and loading dude. Scales tipped!! |
Where do you go to change the dns settings?
|
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/Manage existing connections.
Click Edit... Next... Next... Advanced... Then click the Servers tab. Use specific server address. :) |
can this work on the touch?
timdawg |
thanks for the fix man. real real fast
|
One of the best finds for me yet.. Thanks.
|
I haven't tried it yet, but right now my connection is quite fast with no lag time for connection initialization.
Sometimes it can be slow, which I have generally attributed to bad signal or overloaded servers during peak times. Perhaps hard coding the DNS is allowing the faster connections, but is it consistent? In other words, if it's not consistent, then perhaps we could create a switcher program that would effectively switch out the DNS settings whenever one is slow. I'm just brainstorming possibilities here, I don't know exactly how it works. |
Holy crap, this is AWESOME!! Great work man, I really appreciate this finding as my connection was horrendously laggy and slowwwww. Thanks duder!
|
Im wondering..on the 3.16 rom, tethered and untethered, if this will fix the random disconnects.. Trying this now, will report back
Also, my timerwheelsize is set to 11. Can anyone confirm what theres is set to before changing it to 5 please? |
Most definately an improvement.
Thanks for the great find |
Anyone know what TimerWheelSize is? Not attacking the OP, just trying to be sure this does something, and isn't just the placebo effect.
|
well, i dont know about browsing on the mogul, i really dont use my browser so i cant make a comparison there. As far as tethering, i see no difference using speedtest.net. Roughly around the same speeds i was getting before.
Id like to know where these DNS servers came from? Meaning where did u find them. This is strange, my ping times seem about the same(around ~250ms) but latency seems to be chopped in half when loading pages on my laptop by tethering. Engadget took about 2 seconds to load the full page. Cnet was the same. Im getting about 1100k d/l and about 400k u/l. Myspace even loads ALOT quicker. I think the DNS servers are the culprit. |

i still dont really understand this..i have cox cable in my area, if i switch to that server my internet will be faster on my touch?
|
did reg edit.
for the DNS i did a hybrid of my ISP dns and verizon's 4.4.2.1 and gained about 1/2 of my overall old speed. At home I went from 89kb to 150kb. In town I went from 750kb bursts to 1011kb burts. |
trying this now, cant wait to see the results!
|
pssst..... A faster DNS server/service only allows you to resolve websites/webpages to their IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) addresses faster. A faster DNS server/service does not increase your actual download/upload speed of data.
It may appear faster and DL speeds in timings for a page to be displayed may be faster as the IP address of the site may be returned in half or better of the previous time. Search for OPENDNS in google, there is more detailed info on that site. |
Kinda a noob question but i do I install .reg files on the mogul? I couldn't open it with file explorer and i see an import with phm registry editor but nothing to import a .reg file.
Thanks --EDIT - nevermind missed that you need resco |

I don't think I saw it written any where that it will improve dl speeds. But by your above statement can I take it you also confirm this loads web pages faster and there for is a fix for the internet lag? |
Is this a new registry setting that was not there in WM6.0? I have been looking through MSDN and have not yet found reference to it. Could somebody verify they have this setting on something that is not WM6.1?
|
I have it on 6.0
With that being said it has made zero speed difference for me in throughput. I also have not been able to find any reference to it on MSDN or anywhere else for that matter outside of XDA. Seems a bit odd. |
Ok, I understand how a timer wheel works and I can see how this would have a impact on speed but I don't see any indication that WM6.0 uses them in their TCP stack. I was trying to figure out if maybe they were new to WM6.1.
|
i did an internet hack/tweak that was suggested by a member (primenall) to make my internet faster when connecting to a page...is this the same thing or a variation but better? i have a TOUCH.
|
Can use use this on the 6700 Apache?

The DNS changes worked for me. Reg edit did not stick after soft reset but, it is much faster. confirmed the before and after thru toast.net on text file only. |
I've always gotten better results after rebooting. Ever since the 6700 I found all I had to do was cycle it through flight mode and it would be fast as hell. With the 6800 and 6900 I've found I have to fully reboot to reclaim enough memory for NetFront to be fully functional on certain web sites. Hell I can't even use my camera without rebooting first.
Just figured I would mention this so when you test you will know to first reboot and test before you do the update... and of course you have to reboot after the update because the registry settings will not be effective until then. |
While it is true that DNS will only improve the "Looking for..." times, it is important to consider how many web sites have graphics (ads, etc) that are hosted on multiple DNS addresses, and therefore, faster DNS response would improve those load times since it can resolve and get to that content faster. Moreover, different DNS servers often take advantage of different routes and cache servers (such as Akamai hosted sites) than other DNS servers, so when you're routed to faster servers, you would see faster downloads.
I wouldn't trust it as an end-all-be-all solution, but it can help some people often enough to be worth trying out. :) |
All that I have done is change the DNS and I now get 10KB/s Damn 1x Champaign-Urbana...
We have a patent that is shown off in the phone! You would think they would pay us back with EVDO!!! |
the one thing that im wondering about is how are you guys having calls and being on the net at the same time. I could never do that, and thats one fea. i would love to have, thats the one and only think that i like about AT&T 8525, Tilt.
|
You can't have simultaneous voice and data on EVDO so someone must be using wifi... EVDO is CDMA EVolution Data Only...
|
thats what i thought ohkie, thought i missed something cause i havnt been here in a while
|
The dns settings stoped working for me :( It keeps on giving me an error while trying to locate a website. "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again." After setting the dns settings to defult, everythign started to work again. I still have the reg setting set to 5. And i did notice some inprovement, but not being able to connect at all is no fun :)

You probably won't find a faster or more reliable DNS set than 4.2.2.1 / 2 In the ~4-5 years I've been using it, 4.2.2.2 has only been down once - and all of my customers (60+) use those two DNS servers for lookup. |
