I wanted to know what rooting does for the Epic?

Rooting is to gain Admin access..there is no winmo example but if you use winodws on your pc..you know there is the Admin user that can access system files and etc and then regular user...well thats what root is, by default you are a regular user on Android..and rooting makes you Admin.

Are there roms to install or does everyone do own customizations?

You can do both..there are custom roms..but you can also flash patches like themes and mods on top of your rom using clockworkmod.

How can you install roms?

There are 2 tools..clockworkmod and Odin...also to note we can flash not only roms but kernels as well.

I am just so confused with android.

its ok..once you get a bit used to it it'll be like the back of your hand.

Are all apps in the android store free?

No...but there are more free apps on Android then most other platforms...many apps instead of making you pay give out for free but app has banner ads.

Is their like a jailbreak to get apps for free like on the iphone

Root is effectively like jailbreak..BUT I'd like to point out that doing this is considered illegal..rooting is legal..the getting paid apps for free part.
