New to Samsung Epic

I finally jumped the boat fro the Touch Pro 2.
Sprint finally got me to change my legacy plan.
Paying almost double a month for less minutes and right to use a "new generation smartphone"

I have cusotmized my tp2 i unlocked it installed different roms etc.

I wanted to know what rooting does for the Epic?
Are there roms to install or does everyone do own customizations?

How can you install roms?

I am just so confused with android.

Are all apps in the android store free?

Is their like a jailbreak to get apps for free like on the iphone

Re: New to Samsung Epic

Welcome.
I did the same thing as you about 2 months ago from Sero using a TP2 as well. Android is so much better than WM.

Rooting, Kernels, ROMs can be a little intimidating at first.
Read this to get started from gten: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/sprint-epi...lick-root.html

Also, like Apple's apps, many apps are free but some cost a little money- most are $0.99 to a few a coffees at Starbucks.

Welcome to the dark side

Rooting is to gain Admin access..there is no winmo example but if you use winodws on your pc..you know there is the Admin user that can access system files and etc and then regular user...well thats what root is, by default you are a regular user on Android..and rooting makes you Admin.

Quote:

You can do both..there are custom roms..but you can also flash patches like themes and mods on top of your rom using clockworkmod.

Quote:
How can you install roms?
There are 2 tools..clockworkmod and Odin...also to note we can flash not only roms but kernels as well.

its ok..once you get a bit used to it it'll be like the back of your hand.

No...but there are more free apps on Android then most other platforms...many apps instead of making you pay give out for free but app has banner ads.

Root is effectively like jailbreak..BUT I'd like to point out that doing this is considered illegal..rooting is legal..the getting paid apps for free part.

Re: New to Samsung Epic

thank you for the replies,
i was wondering
what exactly is a kernel?

I am going to try and root my phone tommorow, probably going to watch some videos on how to do it dont want to brick my phone, I read through the new to android thread and its very confusing trying to take everything one at a time to learn the terminology especially.

Re: New to Samsung Epic

The kernel is pretty much where most of the tweaks to the device are done. On the Epic there are tweaks to GPS, the camera, keyboard, plus over clocking and undervolting.

Most custom roms will include a custom kernel. The popular kernels are Genocide (which I personally run) and Vision, plus some others.
