Re: 2.2 unofficial ?
I really like the midNIGHT ROM series. It will require you to take the leap to EXT4 if you want to stay current. I have also used the Viper ROM and its pretty nice (but I like midNIGHT more).

Heres my proffesional inpur on this matter.
I tried midnight rom for the ext4 but that just turned my phone into a nightmare. I tried bonsai and that turned our to be very stable. So stable, I kept it. Now... As for the switch to EXT4, its worth the upgrade 100%! I have 2 epics. One never been rooted, the other clean odin install to dk28 then cwm 3.0.0.5 to Bonsai 2.0 in which is also EXT4. Now I ran all the bench marks and on average the rooted Bonsai EXT4 does file tranfer about 200% to 300% faster than Stock 2.1 eclair. So anything that is heavy on data tranfer does improve. As for the 3d department, I did not see much improvement other than what 2.2 froyo gave it already. So of your on stock, do the 2.2 Ext4 upgrade. U will see a nice boost! Only issue I see is how froyo is not as smooth as eclair. By smooth I mean like the drop down drawer is a bit jerky. And panning left and right on the touch whiz app panels us also not as smooth. Re: 2.2 unofficial ?
Well said Sprintman, (gasp!) I have been going back and forth between Eclair 2.1 and 2.2 trying out different ROMs, I liked Bonsai for the stability and Nebula 1.0.7 for stability and presentation, but as with all the 2.2 ROMs there are bugs due to no source code for Froyo until an official one comes out if at all. I'm currently back on Eclair with a custom kernel because I like how smooth and fluid it is, and battery life is more important to me than Flash.

Re: 2.2 unofficial ?
I have used Syndicate with the Fluff kernel and all was well until I went to sleep with about 68% battery and woke up to a dead phone. I found out later that there was a bug where the battery would drain until you toggled airplane mode off then on. I never had a problem with stock, so I'll stick it out until we hopefully get an update.
