Background data and auto-sync questions

Hey everyone. What exactly is background data? Also if I have background data and auto-sync turned off how much battery will it save? I like to get my gmail synced to me but I think its killing my battery. Thanks.

Background data is when your phone performs something as a process such as syncing your email, your twitter and etc. How much energy does it use? well whenever it syncs it will put your phone out of idle..so it will be equivalent to surfing the internet on your phone minus display energy. so yes if you have syncing set to often it will drain your battery.

I'm not sure exactly on the options of gmail though if it has IMAP IDLE/PUSH mail which may be more efficient.

Re: Background data and auto-sync questions

I think ill disable it and then every so often have my stuff synced to me. Is there anyway to set how often g mail will sync? When I click my account there is no way to set it. All it shows is sync contacts, sync gmail, and sync calander but no time option.

Hey just disable all of it and if U need ur email then just open up the email and it will download it. Or u can just refresh and be good. All ur emails will show up. I am a battery saving junkie so I do all I can to prolong my battery throughout the day. Also if ur phone needs the background sync enabled if its disabled it will tell u. Just like gps. I know with my fbook and twitter, I have it all set to not sync automatically and when I open the app it updates itself. Saves a lot of battery. Now if u just want to have ur email show up as a notification then u will need to enable, but like it was stated b4, it will be like browsing the net minus the screen being used.
