Background data is when your phone performs something as a process such as syncing your email, your twitter and etc. How much energy does it use? well whenever it syncs it will put your phone out of idle..so it will be equivalent to surfing the internet on your phone minus display energy. so yes if you have syncing set to often it will drain your battery.

I'm not sure exactly on the options of gmail though if it has IMAP IDLE/PUSH mail which may be more efficient.
