Welcome to the darkest depth of the dark side MUWAHHAHAHAHA!

Look at the videos in the upgrade section.

We now though have 2 ways to unlock, the one click root and the bonsai unlocker

If your gonna use the one click root method..then here is the latest one:

Oh btw..if by chance your new epic came with Gignerbread..stop what your doing! we need a dump of it first..

hi all, i am a vet at rooting htc devices, but i now need to root a epic and im feelin a bit noobish.
i have read this tut and feel comfortable in trying but i have a question 1st
Are all versions of the epic supported with this method?
for example if your evo hboot is 2.61 you cannot get root as of yet with any method.
the reason i ask is because i dont the epic in my hand to check what version its on and i want to be able to tell my friend if i can or can not root it before he brings it to me.

thanks for reading.

2.1 and 2.2 root using same method, 2.3 roots using a different method....its much easier then rooting an Evo and there is no chance of bricking or etc from just rooting...

Reason 2.3 requires different root method is because Ragecage exploit used to root is fixed by google in 2.3...

The 1 click root in this thread is for 2.1 and 2.2 only...

If you want root on 2.3 there are multiple ways to do it..

1 way to to flash a pre-rooted rom:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/sprint-epi...le-w-root.html

or you can follow this method which should work on 2.1,2.2 and 2.3:

your work may be using a proxy..as for recognizing, you tried installing drivers?(and made sure when you plugin all the 4 drivers install properly for that port?) and if on a desktop using the back ports?

i have tried using different ports and different cables. Worked as far as recognizing the phone and the sd card. As soon as i turn on debugging, i get an error... found usb composite device. A problem occurred during the installation and the device may not work properly. Then i get the same thing with Android UMS.

this is frustrating. thanks for your help.

Re: Epic 4G One Click Root & ClockworkMod [RFS & EXT4]

So...I have an issue getting my laptop (Toshiba Satellite running windows 7 premium) to show my epic in the adb device manager. I've made a lot of progress considering I couldn't get any computer to recognize the phone at all.

I've tried running the oneclick exploit v.2.5.5, I've tried installing, uninstalling, reinstalling a couple different driver packs. I've tried fixing the connectivity issue by installing kies to see if that would help...Kies doesn't even support the epic (which is awesome, seeing as though they're both made by the same company...) I've gone here: Install ADB, USB Drivers For Android [Step-by-Step Guide] and gone through that grueling process, twice. Once on my laptop, and another on my friends laptop (running win xp sp2: it wouldn't even recognize the phone at all...) I've gone into the sys32 folder and searched for the msxml6.dll file and reinstalled it and re-registered that and msxml3.dll files which helped a little (allowed me to find out that kies 2.0 wouldn't support my phone).

Overall when I try to run the adb or the run.bat file the command prompt is telling me the phone is not connected. I've tried 4 different cables, different usb ports, 2 different computers with 2 different OS's, unplugging, rebooting after installs/uninstalls, turning the phone on and off, unplugging, ending the adb process and restarting, etc. I'm nearing my end of day 2 of my failed attempts to get this thing rooted. In the command prompt I've tried to get it to list the device. Needless to say, I'm getting more frustrated, although that more determined to get the damn thing rooted.

Anything I'm missing in this equation?

Sprint forced Samsung to remove Kies support from the Epic so its not gonna work..though it generally does do well at installing the drivers.

Anyways..first of all is your pc 32bit or 64bit? and are you using 32bit drivers or 64bit drivers?

Have you tried using a usb hub?

next...try uninstalling all drivers, kies and everything..install proper drivers, restart your phone, enable usb debugging..now plug in the phone on the bottom right it should be installing 4 drivers to that usb port..which drivers does it install?

KuroiTora 08-31-2011 02:27 AM

Re: Epic 4G One Click Root & ClockworkMod [RFS & EXT4]

64...I made sure I installed the correct drivers 'cuz that was my initial headache last night since most of the drivers my friend and I found were 32 bit.

We tried using a usb hub on my friend's laptop and it didn't make a difference. Right now I'm making more progress with my laptop anyhow. I was able to get it to install the usb drivers where I couldn't even get his to do that doing the same processes I did with mine with the corresponding drivers. I've tried using a usb hub with my laptop and my computer won't recognize the phone at all.

Is there any specific reason why sprint forced samsung to remove the epic from kies?

All drivers and whatnot are uninstalled now.

So I've re-installed the usb drivers after uninstalling everything. The drivers that it said that installed were CDMA Technologies, Samsung Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial and Samsung mobile modem as well as a little blurb at the bottom that said port WDM COM3. The version of the USB driver that was installed was v.1.3.450.0

Still not recognizing it :/

Cause Samsung gave you a lot of things for free which Sprint wanted to charge you money for...ex. That Asphalt 5 game was suppose to be full version and its in the kies market as a full version, sprint loads you up a demo and forces you to buy it.

Kies even includes a way to tether so other manufacturers forced Samsung to make Kies mini...but Sprint said no Kies at all..

do oyu have usb debugging enabled? when you plug it in with usb debugging it should install adb drivers..the thing on the bottom right when you click on it tells you which drivers were installed. IF something faisl to install..go into device manager and install the drivers manually.

I do have debugging enabled. Apparently it's failing to install the adb driver. Where can I typically find that driver to manually install it?

It's not giving me the option to install, just update and uninstall. When I try to update, it tells the the best drivers are already installed.

on the right corner on the notification bar when you plug it in with usb debugging enabled there is a small pc icon with a green dot..when you clcik it..it should give you 4 drivers it attempts to install..I don't rememebr them all off the top of my head but CDC and ADB are 2 of the 4 drivers it attempts to install..do you see that the moment you plug it into a new usb port (that it hasnt been plugged into before)

The manual method works when it fails to install the drivers and they show up yellow in device manager.

It's never attempted to install 4 drivers, just the 3 that I mentioned before.

Download PdaNet

I downloaded the program and installed the drivers, and it did not install the adb drivers or detect the phone after I plugged it in.

The problem I'm having is I can't even get the device manager to show ADB or Android in the list like it shows on the site...

I got rid of the stock cord months ago since it stopped working and I've used several different ports and cords and none have worked. The drivers it's installed are:
USB composite device
samsung mobile modem diagnosic serial
samsung mobile modem

those are the only drivers that pop up to install when I plug the phone in. Even after installing pdanet drivers

Can you use your phone as a USB drive?

See that does not look like you are in usb debug mode...either some drivers are conflicting or your phone just isn't entering usb debug mode...

you can try using odin to install a pre-rooted rom too but it will wipe all data..

I went to youtube to look for a walkthrough to show me how to manually install the drivers and came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7w1ov8JpH8 very simple...went to do it on my laptop, my laptop doesn't even SHOW an ADB interface option with the phone plugged in.

I've backed up my phone 3 days ago and did a factory reset incase any of the apps I had on it were getting in the way of the connection process. So wiping the phone isn't an issue lol

I'm not sure. I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with the differences. I know I've seen roms up to 3.0 but I don't want something that new since it still might have some bugs. Which would you guys suggest?
