Well, as mentioned in my edit above, I got the SRF to install over top of the old one, which fixed my issues and got me up to date. I do appreciate the advice though!

Speaking of which, I don't really understand the journaling thing. I've seen it mentioned a few places, but with little explanation. What is it and why do I need to worry about it?

for sake of a long post it fixes issues like yours if phone dies because of dead battery/pulled battery.

journaling on helps with data consistency...having it on means more overhead thus more writes to your flash rom and a little bit slower. Having it on though prevents data corruption from occurring by A LOT.

With journaling off, you must know how to properly take care of the phone..aka proper shutdowns and etc otherwise all your data can go poof..for most people I would suggest Journaling On...
