(Possibly) Working aGPS Solution! (Take Two)

I'm finishing up the write up, and the cab to install it, but I just got a cold lock in 15 seconds.

Cold lock.

15 seconds.

From hard reset, to setting up gps port in Gmaps, to lock.

;)

Stay tuned.

Gonna do another hard reset and retest, but its so stupidly easy that its...stupid.

Re: Working aGPS Solution!

Right from the start it was tossed around that it would be something simple, but the problem is that you have to be smart + skilled enough to know where to look and what can possibly be changed to give the results you want....a simple solution that takes a lot of skill to find!!

Ok.

So here is the deal.

Its not real aGPS. Its more akin to GPS_Xtra, which i900 users use.

Ok, this is what you do.

This program downloads a list of sattelite locations (up to a week). Google Maps can read these locations. I have not tested with other apps yet. Its basic. The GUI sucks. It cannot even establish its own internet connection, so provide it!

1. Download and install cab.
2. If GPS wasnt set to location on, set it to location on, and soft reset.
3. Establish a net connection. Opening IE is fine.
4. Open Q-GPS. Click download.
5. It will say succeeded when done.
6. Open Gmaps, and configure it.
7. Set it to Use GPS.

Thats it!

It isnt always as quick as I like--my last test took 30 seconds to cold lock.

Give it a shot!

Update 7/6

This is a link to the modded HTC Quick GPS app.

Re: Working aGPS Solution!

Note when I tested it, gmaps and q-gps were installed to Device. That may or may not make a difference.

syrguy1969 06-29-2009 03:36 PM

Re: Working aGPS Solution!

Definetly worth a shot. So does that mean we should run this about once a week?

Adrynalyne 06-29-2009 03:38 PM

Re: Working aGPS Solution!

At best.
At worst, every time you want to use GPS. Only takes a second. I havent had an hour, much less a week to test it ;)

Adrynalyne 06-29-2009 03:44 PM

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

it should be noted that I was sitting inside a house when testing this.

syrguy1969 06-29-2009 03:47 PM

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

Well....I installed both GoogleMaps and this app to My Memory and it downloaded info fine (not very finger-friendly though) and then I opened GoogleMaps and couldn't get a GPS lock at all. I will try moving things around a bit and keep at it. I have been having GPS issues lately anyway, so it may be me. I will keep testing though.

lmao, you are a beast. can't wait to try when i get home. think i am going to leap over to 3.9.1 land first though. thanks a bunch, and awesome news. i will report back if anything is up.

Are the settings for GPS in Google Maps the same as always?

It "seems" to work with WLS as well... About 30 seconds or so.. Definitely faster than before... Good find!! Need to build into your ROMs now! :)

Yes, com 8, 57600 baud.

Holy crap, go Ad! Will try it out now. I have only 8 megs on my my device memory, so as far as I can see I have no choice but to try it on my storage, we shall see....

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

Well, i'm in a place where i usually have a hard time getting a lock, Google Maps can't find where I am, I didn't HR though. I'll mess with it some more outside.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

Noticed something, mine doesn't say 'succeeded', it says done.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

just tried it out on mine with igo 8.3...nada. Igo is in My Storage and q-gps is in device, plus I am in a warehouse where I usually never get a GPS signal, so I went outside briefly to see and still nothing.

Adrynalyne 06-29-2009 04:05 PM

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

If you dont get a gps signal, you dont get a lock, period.

This is not aGPS, there is no tower triangulation taking place. This just speeds up locks of the regular gps.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

Sitting at home, BING it, and BONG! in about 15 sec. Not so working with Garmin.
So Bim Bam thanks Ma'am.
Now Bing wont do as fast but the fact that I got a lock at home (first for me) proves that Adrynalyne is the man. Only thing is that the app has one Ugly icon ;)

Sory, it doesnt say succeeded, it says done.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

No worries, i thought it might have not worked.

Question...does qGPS need to be running for it work?

Omega Ra 06-29-2009 04:10 PM

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

okay, I recant my previous statement. I went outside and stood in the street, re-downloaded using q-gps and opened Igo. Locked in under 30 seconds.

Warm locks are instantaneous I am finding.

For me, anyway.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

You son of a gun, it worked!!!!!!!!!!! You know how much of a problem I have with my gps Ad and it actually worked for me! I stepped outside my office at my job, I am NEVER able to get a lock within MILES of here. Within a minute I was connected to 4 satellites. Wow, this is just amazing.

Edit: In case anyone is wondering, like I said I have google maps installed to my storage, but since the quickgps cab is so small, I put it on My Device

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

Can you post a current gmaps, i think mines old and maybe that's why it's not working, i'm having problems initializing the gps after closing gmaps and reopening.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

I ran this before my first attempt at locking GPS since flashing Adr 3.9 and it didn't seem to help at all on that initial lock (I had to go outside and still took between 5-10 minutes).

After getting this initial 1st time GPS lock I did a soft reset and every subsequent lock came within 30 seconds. This may explain some of the mixed results people may be having.

Ya know, I'm not sure if i've done a cold lock since my last flash...

Greens go to google.com/maps from your mobile browser, and it will email you a link or something. I will see if I can help you, give me a minute

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

The whole GPS thing just isn't working for me and it's the whole reason I flashed originally.

I have yet to get a connection once. I've tried GPS today, and now this. I've switched the settings on my phone to location on and Com8 57600, I've walked to central park during lunch, yesterday...I was taking a ferry from Delaware to NJ and tried it on the wide open dock without a cloud in the sky and STILL couldn't get a signal. It'll just say "Seeking GPS satellites" for an extended period of time and then I'll get a pop up that says weak GPS signal. Wether Im in central park, my office, my house or in a wide open space

If i'm getting this pop up am I supposed to just keep retrying it until I get it?

I feel like I've gotta be missing a step or something somewhere.

I did a hard reset between each test.

Each one was a cold lock.

yeah sometimes it is just a pain. In general the city isn't a great place to do it as the buildings get in the way. I live in Jersey and only really get that weak signal thing on cloudy days and inside my house sometimes. Just find a nice wide open area and don't move for like 10 minutes.

Re: (Possibly) Working aGPS Solution!

TomTom7 seems to grab a GPS lock MUCH quicker, about 1 minute instead of 3.
