Re: GPS without data conection

Agreed. The problem is that the GPS maps require a data connection to download. The GPS will work without the data connection, but without data, there is no way to download maps to provide context.

Re: GPS without data conection

If all your looking for is a top end free gps than yes there is non you can get without stealing it from a torrent. YOur going to have to do youir own work to build one. All the info is out ther i found it with a simple google search. There is free maps out there and freegps put them together. You have to have them both on your phone stored. That is the only way to do that for now. Unless you can download maps from a gps signal. Or have access to a free wifi signal.

Re: GPS without data conection

Ok, i just had a GAY moment here.
So, i got a link for a Program that will allow you to see and change the settings for the Windows GPS Intermediate Drivers.
So, after having the CC20 update, i ran this and Change the Settings to Port 8 for Program, None for Hardware, and 57600 for BAUD from its 300. and BOOM, it work PERFECTLY with Google Maps AND Live Search. Live Search just grabbed it right away and used it when i changed the setting into it to use GPS Intermediate Drivers. It was like BOOM and it works. So i recommend doing that and the GPS will work fine. Yes, i only got between 3-5 Satellites here where my Bluetooth Adaptor would get my 8, but still, the fact i don't have to haul that around makes me happier.
Now when i am stuck in a City and don't know which way to go, this will SOOOOO help.

Re: GPS without data conection

With the GSM Unlocked verison of the Omnia that i have, all i had to do to get google maps and any other gps thing to reconize the gps receiver built in was go to setttings > system > external gps > on the programs tab change the gps program port to com4 not com 3 as programs think that is an irda port. maybe this will help others. other setting there are: hardware = com9 @4800, access = set to allows windows to take care of it.

Re: GPS without data conection

here is an ok free gps off-line mapper, shows only the map with your current location and requires you to run a mapper.exe on a pc to download the specfic region of the world from yahoo or google maps that then becomes your map that you put on phone. works well but has an odd interface http://terracrosser.com/
