Getting email and turning off broadband

I just got an Omnia last week and am still trying to figure everything out. For the first few days, I could not figure out why my battery was constantly so low. I'd charge it to 100, and not too much later I'd surf the web some and I'd notice it was at 50% or lower. I think I figured out the problem, I noticed several times that the wireless status had broadband as connected for hours on end. I'd hit disconnect, only to find it reconnected later. I had my email set to check email every 15 minutes. I set that to an hour. Same problem. I'd look at the wireless and notice brodband has been connected for hours. I set it to manually connect and the problem has gone away. So I'm pretty sure thats it.

How can I fix this? I want it to grab my email, but not leave the connection open and drain my battery.

Re: Getting email and turning off broadband

I think you will find that checking your email every 15 minutes is a bigger detriment to the battery than the EVDO connection staying on.

That said, if you want a timeout, its as simple as a registry edit. I've taken the liberty of making two cabs to do it for you.

One for 1 minute timeout when idle, one will timeout after 3 minutes. If you have any apps keeping the connection active, like a browser, it will not disconnect.

I'll give it a try, thanks! Ever since I turned it off and am connecting manually my battery has been excellent. I don't know what else could have been draining it.

Hey Adrynalyne (aka: Omnia GOD),

So, I've had push email (Microsoft exchange) active since I got my Omnia. My battery usually lasts a day (sometimes I have to charge it in the evening). I went into Activesync and noticed that my schedule was to sync "As items arrive".

If I change it to sync "Every 5 minutes" will my battery last a lot longer?

Probably, yeah. Push email is the devil. Since I've been setting my email to hourly, its incredible. Not terribly practical for the "connected" individual though.

will this time out for things like gps software?

i would like to use it, but i use other software that like to use the data connection like igo 8, garmin, or google maps...

also, is there a way to turn this off if it doesnt work like that or would i have to edit the registry?

where is the registry to change settings for this? i would like to add more time to the 3 minutes and sometimes disable it.

Re: Getting email and turning off broadband

I hate to ask a stupid question but I use gmail (pop) and I have it go and get my email every 5min and sometimes 10min. If I use this to shut of the connection after 1 or 3 min will that interfere with my email?
