How to root a samsung moment

update:
I performed the 1st steps
cd /system/bin
cat btld_testmode > ../btld_testmode (this backs up the file)
cat sh >> btld_testmode (we append it first, don't know why, but we cant just overwrite it at first)
cat sh > btld_testmode (overwrite it)

hit save and reboot at the bottom of the menu
now my phone wont be turn on (not even into diag mode)

UPDATE 2: For some reason I had to pull the battery before it would reboot.

Yeah sorry forgot to mention that. Hitting exit on the app just makes the screen dark.

ok i completed all the steps but when i reboot i dont have root. im using windows 7 and used notepad to create playlogo and created it as a txt. i removed the extension and then pushed it. im going to but up my linux machine and try it on that.

Need Notepad++ or something that can write unix files. windows has extra characters.

Edit: btw make sure you test root access from normal boot using adb shell and then su. I'm noticing my apps arent haveing root but I only tried Root Explorer, and it can't remount due to Samsung using a different filesystem, and Root Explorer is probably passing the wrong filesystem param. I was going to contact the author but I cant find any contact info.

still a no go. created the file using gedit in ubuntu. sprintscreen actually played but still no root after the reboot

Just wanted to let others know I've confirmed this method works to get me a root shell as well. I haven't gone through with making it persistent yet, however.

I just got my Moment yesturday, and though I am a long time linux geek, this is my first venture into android. Can someone tell me how to get to the shell from test mode? I dont see an easy option.

this is nothing more than a root exploit so do not waste your time with it until a more permanent solution is found. If you mess up or skip commands you could essential brick your device.

I know, but i like to fool around with this kind of stuff, I flashed my wm phone several times, and have been using linux for a while know, so i know my way around a shell.

Thanks for your help, and I hope we can get some custom roms flashed for the moment soon.
