WOW! I am really excited by all of this. When a few of us posted our long winded (and in my case layman) thoughts about all of this on Sogarths post I think we were secretly hoping that someone like Glossman, a PM!, would step up.

I think the vision laid out by everyone on where this could all go and how how to get there are great, but just one word of caution. We should definitly sketch out the "grand" plan we have for all of this, and perhaps have parallel processes working on the web app versus basic ROM development, and later, OEM development, but lets not spread ourselves too thin in the beginning and have all of this flameout. The risk is that we divide the attention of our experts and all this gets too complicated and starts to feel like a job instead of a hobby (albeit a highly organized and productive one)!

To that end, lets get the experts into this secret special forum (which I hope I'll be allowed into) and focused on the basic 3.5 kitchen (its leading in the polls) asap! Good luck. I hope to contribute as a tester and hopefully provide some non-technical perspective from time to time if its needed!

Thanks for the input, Jayz!

We look forward to your participation in the project.

I do have similar concerns about running the web app dev in parallel with the ROM development. The reasons being, dividing our resources, and duplication of effort. The architecture of the application could be impacted by the design of the ROM. This could cause extra effort if we get too far ahead of ourselves.

This is just my $.02, though. If the group decides to proceed this way, then we'll find a way to make it happen.

You folks move way too quickly. There've been an awful lot of posts inbetwen when I last checked last night and now.

In any case, if anybody is interested, I can offer my services for infrastructure (which is fitting, considering my day job is as a tools/build engineer). Offhand, I have a few ideas on how this could be organized that I can wax eloquently on if need be.

I've been using several of the roms and I'm currently enjoying saridnour's 3.5 as his tweaks are very much in line with what I need (finally a REAL remote desktop client on our phone that can do custom ports without reg hacks).

My biggest worry is all this effort is being put forward on setting up a web based or unified rom builder only to have MS come back and stomp on us and send us a cease and desist letter from posting roms. I feel like we are painting this giant bulls-eye on ppcgeeks.com website. My personal opinion is that we paid for the phone, which means we paid for the OS and we're doing nothing different then slipstreaming the updates into the OS and reinstalling. But there's the thing. The people that make slipstreamed ISOs of windows don't redistribute them so they don't get nailed by MS, they just tell us how to do it.

How can we setup our work in such a way that we are left alone? Much like Bart PE takes your personal Win XP disk and makes a PE environment from it but does not redistribute the resulting ISO files (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/). Is there a way to do this with our phone's OS?

Oh, and feel free to count me in as a tester. I'm a computer tech and like living on the edge

BartPE is an interesting concept. I'm not sure how it would work in the WM environment. Perhaps some of the gurus can weigh in.

As for the bullseye, perhaps the key is ensure that all files are hosted outside of PPCGeeks so the site doesn't take the hit if MS tries to pull the plug.

Isn't that why XDA-Developers had to pull their stuff down...Because the hosted the files?

If legality becomes a problem then bittorrent is the solution. But let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

I've been Ragin' about having more collaboration between programmers for some time now. Glad to see that the snowball effect didn't get anyone killed.

I think everyone is happy to see work being done towards improvement, but the programmers out there should keep in mind that this site has all ages of participants - some not quite as wise or patient as we wish - but that is not indicative of the usergroup as a whole. So please don't get disgruntled with what you're doing.
My personal apologies to the Colonel for my remark on Monday in his "Custom 3.5" thread saying he was being left behind. I honestly just wanted to influence a unified process.

I've been a database designer / vb developer for over a decade, and if there is a need for this anywhere just let me know.
