i use mp3pro. its half the size of a normal mp3. it says its 64kbps but its the 128kbps equivilant of mp3.

I use audacity (found on sourceforge.com) is free and available on almost all platforms.

That is what i use on my macbook. Then I use vmware to upload the ringtones to my phone with a windows xp virtual machine. No problems here with that scenario. In fact i don't sync with a native version of xp. Only virtual machines under linux and mac osx.
