How to: Replace WM Splash/Boot Screen

Nothing to fancy or crazy, but a nice subtle change to your Splash Screen:

Creator/Source
"I made a flashy Vista splash screen for the PPC startup. You only see it for a few seconds but I think it's a lot better than the stock one.

I have also included the original in case someone decides to try this and go back, and for comparison purposes.

To install: simply move the file named "welcomehead.96.png" into your Windows directory. You will see the splash when you soft reset!

This splash supports both portrait and landscape views."

Just right click and save this file. Rename it to welcomehead.96.png and copy to your \windows directory. Copy your old one to your storage card if you want to save it. The original is also availabe at the link at the top of this page.

Of course I did this myself and it works just fine.

UPDATE:
To do this for 240x240 Screens e.g. Treos see this post:

It's a protected file, so rename it (change the .png to .old) and then copy the new one over, or use a program like TotalCommander.

Resco finally got this done for me but the image posted isnt the correct size to be a splash screen. ;)

jamaa124 12-16-2006 01:29 PM

what size should the image be? mine looks weird in landscape.

gbm85 12-16-2006 02:51 PM

Splash screens need to be 320 x 320, since sometimes they get shown through a 240 x 320 screen (portrait) and sometimes 320 x 240 (landscape). The default boot screen leaves an 80 x 80 blank square in the bottom right corner since that part is never visible.

As in the Ultimate Fighting Championship one?

I could, not exactly my style, but I can try...

(I know I'm gonna get lots of funny looks at work with naked men on my photoshop.)

Alwaysbelieve1 12-20-2006 04:42 PM

i really appreciate it as it is my style. im not very good in photoshop or I'd do one myself. :)

thanx a lot! :)

konceptz 12-20-2006 04:56 PM

Funny yes!
Done, yes!

But really, the only reason someone couldn't make this one, is because they don't have Photoshop.....

Works best in Widescreen mode.

Wow! That is perfect. Thank you so much!

This seems to be very easy for you. If you would offer a step by step tutorial I would be indebted to you- mostly concerning the photoshop part. :)

TYVM.

As far as a tutorial, I can do a simple one.

I just start with a 320x320 blank image with resolution set at 100 and 16bits color.

Then add whatever you want, making sure to remember that it will display in 320x240 and 240x320.

I found that small icon-type images seem to look nice on the screen for bootup, similar to those icons that pop up when OSX starts.

Start with a good background, that will display nicely in both modes, and add layers on top of it.

Save the project and save as a PNG file. Then follow the instructions for our phones. You're done!

I hope this helps.

Malatesta 12-21-2006 05:55 PM

Guys, I'm going to move this to the Themes section.

When I first posted this the Apache forum was really the only major one we had  but others can clearly benefit from this info.

Case in point, this works on the 700/750 too. You use a 320 x 320 image but only 240x240 of it (the upper left corner) is shown.

Here is an example that I made that works flawlessly (note: this is just a sample, do not copy or download this file. I can post it if someone really wants it):

Now if someone could post an easy how-to on how to change the Boot Loader screen. Would like to change this from the stupid Verizon screen on my xv6700. I've looked through the roms (running aku 2.2 at the moment so I actually have the telecom boot screen) and can't discern where the dang thing is.

littlewaywelt 01-24-2007 02:46 PM

Why does it need to be 320x320?
I saved a pic file as 240x240 and it seems to work just fine.

I switched out the Verizon screens using a similar technique. I copied the original files to my desktop and then resaved using the same name, then I pasted the files back into the windows folder.

I don't have to be reminded that I am using windows mobile or verizon now. I hate paying for something and then advertising for them constantly.

lawmangrant 02-06-2007 01:20 AM

well, I got around to revamping my bootscreen today.....I am a Vanderbilt fan, so it shows on my boot screen!

Whatcha think?

Oh yea, i made the 320x320 image to be safe, but only designed inside the 240 x 240 area.

xmind2006 03-06-2007 01:56 AM

A couple months late to the party as I haven't been looking at the WM splash screen for some time now, but thought I'd still post the pic I'm using (from my favorite band):

LadySaat 04-08-2007 06:23 AM

awww I really liked the look of the windows vista one but its' way the wrong size. I don't know how to make it bigger/fit right.

Now I have to play around with my photoshop and see if I can do something.

I want a 300 theme actually ;-)

bmatic586 04-17-2007 11:10 PM

xholmezx78 05-11-2007 07:41 AM

ok peeps! I have tried all steps several times with no resolution.
I tried to rename the file to .old and it will not save. I have tried to use Resco explorer and total commander. Both failed. I have tried to overwrite the file, delete the file, change attributes, and nothing is working. Any suggestions?

syrguy1969 05-11-2007 11:40 AM

Is it possible to replace it with a gif, or with sound as well? I was thinking of maybe a TARDIS materializing, or a DALEK saying "exterminate" (it's a Doctor Who thing....sorry).

If neither of those ideas fly, I take any picture, decrease it to a 320 x 320 image with the upper corner the 240x240.......right?

(or can I just create a 240x240)

syrguy1969 05-12-2007 07:40 PM

I made two, I will place one on tonight, but I thought I would show them and see what you guys think. I only made them 240x240 since I only have that size screen (700wx), but if there are any other whovians out there, I would love to share and make more (and get better I hope).

Let me know what you guys think...nothing special I know, but I think its cool!!!
http://upload8.postimage.org/317261/primesplash.jpg

I just added it onto my Treo, and it looks GREAT!!!! Thanks for the instructions guys, I couldn't have done it without ya!!!!

sdjthorin 12-21-2007 11:07 AM

Hi All,

Thanks for the great info, I've got an image to use, but even with Total Commander I can't replace the png file, says it can't change/delete it as it is a ROM file.

Is there any way around this?

Thanks

urvi 12-21-2007 05:20 PM

Can someone post thee one from the touch, the stock one, i accidentally deleted it of my desktop. Just in case i decide to go back to factory.

jsls 12-21-2007 07:46 PM

HOWTO: Changing Windows Mobile SPLASH screen on startup

1 Attachment(s)
hey, i havnt seen a thread on this, and i know that the windows mobile 6 splash screen (bright green) when you turn the phone on gets to some people cus it got to me dammit! lol... anyway, its very simple to change, you will need to find an image you want (240x320) and name it to "welcomehead.96.png" without the quotes. using resco explorer, or any other file explorer that gives you full access, place the new .png file in the /Windows directory. it will ask if you would like to replace becuase the file is located in ROM, hit yes.

NOTE - once you change this, it is done. you cannot "undo". you will have to find the original splash screen and replace again if you want to go back..

anyway, here is the one i made, if you guys have them , lets see them!!

another quick note - i have only dont this on my Sprint HTC Vogue (Touch)... i dont know if it will work with other PPC's so if they break, do NOT hold me accountable.. whenever you edit the ROM you always have a chance of bricking your device!!

heres another one i made real quick... enjoy!

Spunks3 01-03-2008 05:36 AM

for some reason they are not uploading 240x320, if anyone wants these ill zip them up and add them... o well, sorry about all the posts haha

jeffwessel 01-03-2008 05:49 PM

I would be interested in the second one if you didn't mind making it into a zip file. Thanks!
