Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

Stopped by the Apple store while I was at the mall yesterday and played around with the iPhone for a while. I know everyone here is an iPhone hater but I have to say I was very impressed. The touch screen much more responsive and internet pages are rendered a lot more quickly. And of course the screen is a lot more impressive (even with the lower resolution, can't beat size).

I know the plans are more expensive, can't customize as much, and blah blah blah. I'm wondering who has one or came from one has to say about the phone. I don't want to hear from people who have just played around with one or knows someone with one. I'm wondering what regrets I would have if I switched to the iPhone.

2 possible deal breakers for me would be Slingbox and Pushmail. I've seen a youtube video of the iphone slinging, but is this 'hack' readily available like custom ROMS are for the touch pros? And I'm guessing push mail is probably available but just wanted someone to confirm it.

What other regrets would I have?

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

Why use slingbox when there is orb?

I may switch. Doesn't get hot!

No flash on camera

You could probably sell on eBay for what you paid even with $175 cancel fee, if you don't like it.

This will get moved to "off topic" though

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

If you use exchange on your phone, be prepared for some wonky *** strange stuff like e-mail stops coming in until you restart the phone or disable some features and even then it doesn't always work.

At my work we have about 30 iphone users and in the past month I have met with half of them to delete and re-add their exchange account because of strange stuff like that. That made me realize I could never live with an iPhone. It would drive me nuts!

I currently have an iPhone with my other business account as well as a Touch Pro. The iPhone is absolutley ,in my opinion, the best Touch screen device on the market. Having said that it has it's shortcomings and I prefer my TP for day to day tasks and use. Comparing the two is truely comparing Apples to Oranges as the both a very good at certain things and they both have downfalls. What are the everyday things that you want to do with any phone/device you purchase and what can you live without?

<watches and waits as the iPhone hating begins>

Just as a commentary....the web pages may have rendered faster on the iphone in the AT&T store...but outside in the real world.....Sprints network is faster :)

big one: If the phone is lost, stolen, broken, needed to be replaced in any way, there is no insurance so you have to pay the full price of the phone.

I think best buy has a replacement plan for 15 bucks a month though...

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

I had an iphone
and I sold it fast for a lot of reasons
1. hardware keyboard - it didn't exist
2. copy and paste
3. I can't customize it even with a jailbreak
4. audio/video support formats (TCMPC does a lot better and its free with support of ALL application)
5. No office support and I need office in some way, shape, or form

ultimately, the deal breaker for me is this - the iphone is simple, but its far too simple even for me in that I'm almost stuck with what apple wants me to do with a device. Windows mobile has its flaws, but I am not stuck with regards to what I need to do on the daily basis. If I want an application to watch movies (and not spend time converting the file to apple friendly formats) and still use my office and IM for school and work, I can do that with winmo. I can't do that with the iphone. The battery life is okay, better than my mogul, but when using data intensive applications, battery is out in about 4 hours where my touch pro can chug out about 6 hours on data.

As far as browser is concerned, skyfire is the fastest mobile browser I have seen (barring from opera mini). If you think I am a windows mobile fanboy, in part I am. I truly am. but in the larger scheme of things apple has a good product for I hate to say it but it is a good products for idiots. A person that never held a pocket pc or something but wants what a pocket pc offers in a fashionable light. Stick with windows in essence

Excellent points. The iPhone is way more intuitive for the average user coming from a regular cell. My Dad is 63 and severely tech challenged and he has no problem with the iPhone but can't begin to use my TP for anything other than calls. It's very funny to watch.

Besides using the phone of course, I do a lot of email, and I use the internet a lot. I watch a lot of video but it's not necessary. Just like to grab a nice couch at the mall when the wife's shopping. lol.

I thought I would need a hard keyboard but the iphone keyboard works pretty well. A lot better than the touch pro on screen keyboard.

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

I personally don't use office applications on a phone.

The email problems are known and should be fixed with 2.2

It currently does not tether.

Orb works great with iphone, and orb will play your videos from your home computer.

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

sorry to post cause i dont have an iphone, but i was wondering if it really does render pages as quickly as you saw in the store... did they have wifi turned on, so people would think it was faster? in the head to head matchups they have on phonedog, iphone seemed pretty slow or the same as other phones when not using wifi. then again maybe att is better than sprint in ur area.
if u use ur windows phone to its full extent and love customizing.. i would stick with the touch pro.. if you like to keep it simple with a nice interface and dont mind the lack of support... then get the iphone. remember that while we have devs to fix any problems or enhance our phone, people with iphones have to wait for an official update and that doesnt always go that great. Most of our programs are found free on here and other sites. you'll probably spend $$$ on programs on the iphone. and i hear they have orb now, but didnt we have that like a year ago? and i don't think u can tether either cause they took down the program that enabled that in the app store the moment it came out ha. you'll have to jailbreak ur phone if you dont want to feel like ur confined in jail. weigh your options and choose wisely, u know urself best and probably know what ud to be happy with in the long run.

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

I don't have an iphone but I have friends that do.

For what it does, it is Excellent. It is just fun to play with. Very intuitive and it works pretty much out of the box. Also loading programs, songs and videos via itunes is easy (perhaps the hallmark of the iPod/iPhone legacy). But of course it's not for everyone.

The WiMo phones are much more customizable but that's the rub. You NEED to be a bit technically inclined to take full advantage of the power of a WiMo phone. I'd say if you are reading this forum, you probably fall into that category.

jimd144 11-20-2008 02:48 PM

Re: Anyone have an iPhone or come from one?

It's also on an expensive carrier, at least compared with Sprint.

But, with Sprint trading at $1.50 today, they may not be here in the Spring.

That's the thing for me...I wonder if we need to make all these customizations because the Pro just doesn't work the way we want it to out of the box.

The pro works FINE out of the box though. There's nothing being done to make it function correctly, only make it run a little smoother and look prettier. I see customizing this phone (like adding custom roms and such) as being a bit like overclocking. You've gotten what you've paid for the moment you buy a cpu, but as soon as you add some voltage and up the speed, all that is free performance.

Try using an Instinct. Almost nothing works and on top of that, there is absolutely nothing to be done about it.

I find the Touch Pro beats the iPhone hands down on the email front. Especially since I use Exchange with Push Email. iPhone beats the TP on video playback but the windows os has alot more options on available players and file formats. The thing I prefer on the internet side on my TP is the use of Pocket IE when I don't need the full website view. PIE loads much faster in my opinion and it is nice to have two browsers.

As far as keyboards go I make way more mistakes on the iPhone typing than on the TP mostly because i use the hard keyboard 95% of the time. Just my personal preference.

On another note I have done side by side comparisons on a few websites with my Touch Pro and iPhone and my TP renders slightly faster and I am really starting to love the Opera browser

I am an Iphone poweruser. Iphone has a hardcore 3d engine. it can perform 1080P full HD video. Same quality as Bluray disc. It can be a remote control for various devices including roomba.LOL. It can be a touchpad for PC's. It is customizable in a different level. WM customizes by immitating other devices. Iphone owners does not do that coz they think it's a downgrade for the Iphone. Tethering functions is coming soon. Pls seach Youtube for videos of their games tht will amaze you. Start searching with this keywords. iphone starwars then go to related videos for more.

I am WM poweruser too and I do a lot of things with my WM device. I tether a lot with my WM and I paid low monthly payments.

I am the consumer. These devices are made for me. So why would I limit myself to pick just one if I can have 2?

To people that don't know, If the monthly payment for the Iphone is high, It's not the device's problem. It's the carrier. Iphone is a great piece of technology. U wouldn't know if U just tried it. Or ur friends has 1. U have to mod it like we mod WM.

I too am considering getting the iphone. My work's exchange server doesn't seem to want to work with my phone. I can do activesync just fine and all, but then I wonder what's the point of having a phone like the TP if i can't get my work email away from work?

On top of that, I used to watch movies on my old instinct all the time here in my office.

So really, it comes down to a few things for me, and multimedia presentation is a big one, and that seems to be where the iphone excels over the TP. I still enjoy the openness of the TP though. I don't like how Apple has such a tight grip on the iphone. I mean what's the deal with flash? Cmon apple.

Iphone SDK has policies. It's made like that to protect their business and the developer of that app. Let's face it. WM devices are so open most people get all the apps that they install for free(warez). If that thing keeps continues, The WM app business will die and eventually the OS itself which is already starting.

Really? I haven't found many sites that offer pirated WM apps. I simply have gotten everything I need from freeware. Seems like the apps you pay for are a waste of money anyways (at least the ones I've seen.)

What's a good app that costs money anyways? I saw a torrent app that cost 20 bucks...

I get the impression that the iPhone was made for simpletons who want to appear 1337 without actually having to learn anything or think. No offense to anyone who has one, but that's just the impression *I* get. Kudos to Jobs for cornering a market niche.

I personally LIKE how WinMo requires some techiness to use, I find that it keeps snoopers out of my phone. People will ask to see my Mogul, begin messing with it, and become completely lost within 30 seconds. They hand it back to me with a defeated expression and that just warms my cold little heart =D

So the iphone doesn't lock up on you leaving you forced to connect to a pc to restart it? (can't take the battery out) One of the main reasons I'm afraid to get one really. My last phone, the instinct, needed to be restarted all the time like this. When I told my friend greg about it, he said at least its not as bad as an iphone. Aparently his locks up a lot. Has 2.1 fixed this or something?

The reason why The battry is sealed is because U do not have to replace it. HTC gave us a crappy battery so HTC gave us the priviledge to replace it with out own money. HTC or it's carriers does not want us to return the the entire phone just for the battery issue. They want us to replace it by buying a better battery.
