Verizon Phone recommendations

My son in college asked me for suggestions on a verizon phone for his girlfriend's mom. The requirements were: A touchscreen phone OR one with a large QWERTY keyboard.

Those of you with knowledge about touch screen phones, please post your pro's and con's--I've heard mainly cons.
