What's the best way to wake up phone without disturbing current action?

I got ya know I have mine set so there is on dim screen I have both the back light and power shut down timers set to 1 minute so its either on or off.

I just checked and mine is set the same way. The problem is during that minute the screen dims (not completely black but close) and that's when I run into problems pressing keys....or at least I used to. The quick press of the side button works for me.

If you're on a call, hit the option+power button. that will set the keyguard and won't hang up on the call. I think it will dim the screen as well. (did i get off topic?)
