Well if you have never changed a registry entry then there's no registry entry to be changed. As said before, this could also be caused due to a corrupted cache/temp file, have you tried erasing your temporary files?

Yes i try to proactively clear it after most sessions, because if i dont at some point it will begin to crash again. it's an annoyance i'd like to resolve for good but i'm lost as to where to start.

Well if you haven't done any modifications to your device/registry, or you can't find a pattern (maybe a specific site you always visit that may be downloading the corrupt temp file), then I would try a hard reset and then use PIE for a while to check if the problem fixes itself.
If it comes back by itself, then it may be your device.
