I think it's a combo of both, because it all depends on what BT profiles are supported by both the headset and the device, and the also BT profiles are offered by the device.
I'll bet her BT headset has a headphone profile and that's why it worked like that.

Yes, it is both. As far as I know, all BT headsets allow support for A2DP. Therefore, in order for the device to use that headset, it must support A2DP as well.
