Setting up GMail as a POP3 account on mobile devices has always been tricky, I was never able to do it.
mail2web does offer a free solution, you get a mail2web e-mail address on an Exchange server with push e-mail. Then you can forward your GMail address to the mail2web address and basically get push GMail. You just won't be able to reply from the GMail address from POutlook. Check the FAQs sticky or go directly to the General Discussion forum to find the mail2web thread with a tutorial on how to set it up and many, many pages of discussion.

It's not your phone's fault, it's gmail's fault. Gmail adds your sent message to the email "thread" as a new email, technically, but your phone doesn't know the difference, so it just downloads it too.

dmfreck is right, it's a gmail thing. This even happens with my regular Outlook on my desktop unit when I send from gmail web, it shows up as a new inbox item. For that I've just created a rule to move it to my sent folder. I found it actually easier to access my gmail account from my treo using the browser and the mobile version of gmail. I never liked the way it worked coming into my Poutlook. Only negative is I don't get an alert when there's new mail.
