Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

I am starting a project up, although the device is old it is still a good device, I am going to be working on getting this to work, Once I do get it, if I do, I will try and expand everything to the new Q devices, Qc and Qm and stuff like that.

So I will try and post my progress here has i can get it.

Where I stand right now.

I have files decompressed, I have all of the dumps, for a verizon Motorola Q monster file. I have SYS and OEM from those. I have found the IMGFS start address and I am working on getting the xip out of there now.

The motorola q has a rom size limit of 78000 KBS, it uses XPR rom compression Type.

I am working now on getting the xip like i said, going through the files with a hex editor trying to find everything. once i can get the xip out, i will be able to build the rom and everything. once i get that made, I will need a test device to flash and see if it works.

I have posted a message in Bargin trader about someone having a Moto Q I Could buy for this project thought i would mention it here has well.

Stay tune for future updates.

This would be awesome. It would be great to update my wife's phone. She is jealous of all the flashing I do to my touch pro.

ok that's good news.
I gave up on it and gave my girl's lil' bro the Q
I purchased an Alltel TP.
I would of kept it if I had knew that there was a project in the midst.
I like the scroll wheel on the right side.
Its just a good phone to me.
*Off-Subject*
What are you gonna do when Alltel completely transitions over to Verizon?

Sweet thanks for doing that. has for now, I will share a little of my progess so far. here is the XIP for the Q and the Q9c, I will get the Q9m later on. But here are those 2 xips.

The Q9c is a 6.1 XIP, SYS 19704
The Q XIP is WM5, SYS 5.1.14960

Also the Q9m XIP is now uploaded.

This is fascinating. Keep us posted. I just started using a Q (waiting on a pre) and I love ROMs.

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

I think you should focus mainly on the original Q then move forward, because the original Q is the one in most need of the upgrade.

This Should Be a Sticky

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

Yes the orginal Q is my main focus, but once I figure that out. then I will have the stardard down and it will work on the others has well.

but yes, the orginal Q is my main focus. I am charging up 2 batteries for them now, so I can get everything tested and going. I will be flashing the first trial run tomw morning to see how everything goes. for now I will just be flashing the same stock rom. and from there start to porting it. But what i need to do first is to make sure that I can rebuild a stock rom without an issue.

so that is my next step, and I will be doing that when I get off wrok tomw morning.

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

Well good news, I have found out some interesting things with the Motorola Files. and I have been able to recreate the stock roms. so I can dump the stock roms and I can rebuild them. and flash them back to the Q and have everything work. So It is close and this will be a realty.

Right now this is not really a streamlined way of building for them, but once I get stuff going, I will post screenshots and I will also post a file and kitchen up with details how everyone can do it.

But I am getting really close on this now. so this has been a good day.

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

I know there was some confusiion has if this will bring 6.0 and 6.1 and 6.5 to the orginal Q, and I am going to bring at least 6.0, will get 6.1 shoudnt be a big deal. and 6.5 I will try but I can not promise much of anything at this point.

But yes it will bring 6.0 to the orginal q.

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

Is there somewhere we can donate in appreciation once this is done? 6 on my Q would be worth something.

conflipper 05-14-2009 09:35 AM

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

i will not take donations, i do this for a hobby and cause i love doing it, and because of that. i will not accept aanything. i already have one other person that has offered a Q for me to use has a test device, so that alone is more then i could have asked for. its time this happened on the Q i had that device when it was first out, and i was really hoping for wm6, and then when it never happen, i was sad, and everywhere i read, rthey said it cant be done, that if there is no official rom, then it cant be done, and so i feel now like although late, this can still be done, and that it will help othere.

That's mighty awesome of you.

I'm using a Q till the Pre gets here, and would gladly help test if needed.

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

Stupid files now. I am doing a lot of the work in a hex editor trying to get everything like I want to. splitting the files up and everything else. and it is kinda being a pain. Staring at hex code all day is hard on the eyes. But I will get this.

where I am at now, is I think I have all the files broken up like i want. and now i am having troubles rebuilding the imgfs.bin, what happens is when i flash, it gets stuck in bootloader, so i am looking at a stock and trying to find out what command i am missing that will send it out of bootloader. once i find this, then it will be a large step forward.

I'm currently using the Q. Best device I've ever owned to tell you the truth. I really appreciate you putting time and effort into this project. You will make tons of people happy if 6.1 is on the Q.

Re: Custom ROM on Motorola Q *Project*

Sorry went to sister graduation, and then I am working. 2 more days of work, and then I will have 4 more days to devote to this. I am close, I have 5 of the 6 parts working perfert, I need to get the last part working.

what is happening right now is when I flash it, it will go fine, and everything is write okay, but then it gets stuck in bootloader mode. so I am missing something that will get it out of there. and I am looking, but its taking some time.

so that is where I am at right now with this, its coming along and it will be good once it gets finished.

i have three q's at my store and my personal q i can brick if you want testing help con and the command you are missing is probably the initialization string which tells the ARM to read the internal memory... could have accidently overwritten it in your file rewrites

I also have a old Q from sprint that can be used for testing. Just let me know where I can get the files when they are ready and I will gladly give it a try. Thanks for your contribution

Man, that was a threadstopper, no new posts for two days?, im a BRAND NEW POSTER, and im way interested in this project, I would like to learn how it's done, so i can maybe make my own rom at some point, isn't that what this forum is about?, learning to do things on your own? but to learn to do something you have to learn about it first.......

I look forward to any updates on this one, thanks con for taking the time to work on such projects.
