new to droid

so im switching over to the droid from my diamond for a test run (found a good deal on the droid so i figured i would try it out)

i have questions that i did not see the answer to after a quick search (havent had time to do a good search yet as im at work)

first ones a deal breaker for me...
-on my WM phone when i sync'd to outlook at work my job forced the phone to set up a pin number lock for security reasons... but when i try it on the droid it just says that the phone doest support the security protocol or something like that.... anyone know a way around this?

second is trying to figure out how to sync my contacts from the windows phone... i dont want to do it through a google account though. on my old phone i would use a free app like PIM or NSB Backup... any ideas?

thanx for the help guys, hopefully i can get the outlook syncing or the phones got to go

Re: new to droid

Not sure about the pin lock for Outlook. Surely it can be done though.

As far as the contacts sync goes, you can import contacts from a vcard file exported from Outlook or wherever on your memory card. If you have your contacts in Outlook, create a vcard file and place it on your card. Go to contacts on the Droid and select menu>import/export>import from sd card. It will find the file and sync.

I, however, use gmail to sync. I know you said that you don't want to use this method, but it is probably the easiest way. Good luck

Re: new to droid

Pin Enforcement is available through 'Touchdown'. It's a very nice mail app for the android phone. If you are a power user of mail this is the way to go. It's $20 from the market but you can try it for free for 5 days.

I'm an administrator for a MS Hosted Exchange environment that supports over 1.5 million users. I know ActiveSync and I whole-heartedly recommend Touchdown. It's secure, reliable, and easy.

Contacts on the Droid need to be tied to a synchronized account: either gmail OR active sync.

If you're syncing through activesync you have two options:
-through a cellbrite machine at your Verizon store
-through your Personal Contacts once you have activesync set up. (just add them to outlook and they will show up almost instantly on your phone.)

Re: new to droid

worked out well... my wife had plans last night so i got a few hours to mess with the new toy...
sadly i dont have an SD card yet so im limited..
i did set up a gmail acount and spent over an hour figuring out a way to get my contacts off my WM phone (found a small exe that runs on the WM and exports a csv file, then loaded that into gmail and sync'd)
for some reason it didnt sync completely, i can see some contacts numbers on my gmail but they dont exist on my droid... still looking into this

until i get the SD card i cant DL a new exchange app for email.. so ill have to wait

couple things ive found so far..
(btw, im one of the guys who really liked his WM6.5.3 phone)

cant figure out how to open attachments from email, but i think i read that one of the email apps might help

i checked the app store, but didnt see an app that turns the droid in a mobile wifi hotspot, does one exist?

also i cant seem to copy text from emails, could that also be solved with an app?

other than that, im enjoying the faster smoother software and cap screen, not to mention all the extra pixels..

thanx again for all the help
-Danny

Re: new to droid

Most of your issues are likely related to not having an SD card. Opening attachments requires that you download them first, contacts need to be stored on the sd card (onlyl so much fits in cache), copying text from emails is easily done in touchdown.

Im not certain about setting up a mobile hotspot, I know that you can get wifi tether going but that's only one device at a time and it does require root. If you're a tweeker you'll probably want to root anyways. The sholes smupdater application is probably the most straightforward and as a plus it also includes the wifi tethering. (Rooting can void your warranty.)

Re: new to droid

Thanx Banden,
thats kinda what i figured...
and yes i only need to connect one laptop to the phone..

another issue im finding coming from my diamond... the reception on this phone seems to be horrible....i no longer get a signal in my house and barely at work...(my WM got a perfect signal)
is there any tweaks to improve the signal?
(this could be a deal breaker for me )

I just got my droid a little over a week ago and it came with a 16 GB card preinstalled. Are your sure your droid doesn't have an SD card? Go to Settings>SD card & phone storage and look under SD card at Total space. You should be able to tell if it has an SD card.

Re: new to droid

Yeah, all Droids come with a 16gb storage card. I guess if you bought a used one, someone could have robbed it. I have perfect reception pretty much everywhere I go and I live in rural New Mexico where Verizon doesn't even really exist.
