It was announced by Motorola so, they wouldn't have any info on HTC devices. Likely no. HTC still hasn't ported the Sense UI over to Android 2 so I imagine that's the reason for your delay.

I can't imagine Motorola not blocking the current exploit which allows root access. It is a security issue.

Re: Official: 2.1 Comming over the next week.

IF I wanted to check out the new update, couldn't I always flash back to the 2.0.1 update to re root later?

Well it is here-say, but the thinking is they will patch the default recovery to not accept those update.zip files.

The current method of rooting is piggy backing the official 2.0.1 update file. Now that motorola is aware of how it's being done they will likely make the update software have additional security. If they do implement a 'fix' for this, after installing the next update you won't be able to flash back; you will have to wait until someone finds a way to root the new version.

Also, people who purchase their phones after that point would then be unable to root too.

Re: Official: 2.1 Comming over the next week.

I just got my droid last week and wanted to get to know it better before I rooted it. Will I be forced to upgrade to 2.1 or can I choose not to install the update?

If I recall, 2.0.1 didn't give the option of installing it later.

Personally I rooted because I knew the mod community was growing and I knew this update was on it's way. I bought this phone with the full intention of rooting it.

Also, nobody said definitively that the update will patch the root exploit either so who knows?

I think I will wait for someone else to try it first then. The update looks like most of the roms already out there (2.0.1 with 2.1 apps) minus wifi tether and OC.

I had the option of updating now or lator when 2.0.1 came out. I am sure there will be that same option

According to Engadget we won't be getting the new launcher or live wallpapers. Check it out here:
