A question about nfsfan's 6.5 upgrade

I have a verizon xv6900 that came with 6.1. Im really new at this so sorry if these have been asked but please bear with me. If i use the v13 of the 6.5 can i just download it? is there a faq for this because i dont want to brick my phone. And if i upgrade, will everything work as normal? will my data block still be on? very nooby questions im sorry. Thanks in advance.
