Re: will gps work without sprint service

I'm trying the GPS right now on a Touch that doesn't have any service yet. I install Google Maps and so far it can't get a GPS lock. (10 minutes or so)

I also have a Touch with service and Google Maps works fine.

Just tried it again and the no service yet Touch HAS the GPS working!

I never knew that.

Google Maps and Windows Live maps are online services. As such, they require an Internet connection. In order to make use of your GPS without any service, you will need a standalone GPS program such as Garmin XT. The GPS should still lock onto satellites to provide your location coordinates, but you would still need a GPS program to display your location on a map.

Re: will gps work without sprint service

Make sure you update your device to the latest ROM and then you can use something like TomTom 6.

Then in your device.

Start | Settings | System tab:
1) External GPS = COM 4 [under Programs tab]
2) Hardware = None | Baud Rate = 4800 [under Hardware port tab]
3) Access = UN-check the "Manage GPS automatically [under Access tab]
The launch TomTom, Change Preferences, Show GPS Status, Configure, Scoll to the "Other Bluetooth GPS" option then tap on "Select" button, "Continue" button, Choose the com you just set and you are all set.

Until the latest ROM from HTC, I had to use Astro Launcher.. with the new Rom I don't.

hope this helps.

Re: will gps work without sprint service

If you want to verify that GPS is working w/o a data connection, use something like WMMiniGPS (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-...igps-v1-2.html) which just looks at the raw GPS data. It won't show your position visually on a map, but at least gives you a read-out of the data. You can also use a GPS program that stores the maps on your SD card, as several others have mentioned. As mithodge said, something like Google Maps or Windows Live maps require service because their maps are stored online. The GPS should not require a data connection (and anyone w/ a Touch or Mogul can test this just by turning off the phone radio, aka flight mode).

Re: will gps work without sprint service

Does anyone know about getting a GPS lock with a Bell HTC Touch?
I have the phone with Bell 3.09.666.1 ROM, 2.03_007 PRI, and 3.42.50 radio. I'm trying to develop a WM program in C# that uses GPS, using Microsoft.WindowsMobile.Samples.Location wrapper, so I've figured out that the phone has a QualComm GpsOne Card, version 0.0. I've tried out the WMMiniGPS, but it can't seem to get a lock. Any ideas??

Update: Okay, nevermind it works afterall! It's just difficult to find an area open enough, without a lot of buildings around (I'm in downtown Toronto). I found that I could get about 5 satellites on average and that my location was accurate to the tens of meters, but altitude and speed data weren't at all accurate. It took about 1-2 min. to establish a lock, no data service required.
