Re: What is the reason for terrible GPS performance on the Vogue?

I too used to have problems getting locks, sometimes lock would come instantly and others would never. Even after updating to 2.03 PPST GPS left a lot to be desired. It worked great the first time after flashing, but over time GPS performance gradually disappeared. One day I decided to flash to GhettoFreeRyder's roms and after doing so I started to get consistent locks in under 15 sec everytime. GPS was 100% consistent with fast locks under 15 sec with 2.03 PPST.

When the new "official" Sprint leaked 3.03 ROM came out, I flashed to it after reading that many people were getting sub-5 sec locks with it. For whatever reason, the 3.03 rom had worse GPS performance...half the time it wouldn't work and half the time it would take several minutes to get a lock. So I flashed back to GhettoFreeRyder's v715 rom and now have consistently fast GPS locks again. Dunno what he puts in there that is different from other roms, you may want to try for yourself to see if it gives you better GPS performance.

I use only 2 map programs these days--Google Maps and iGo8. I do use AstroGPS primer for iGo8 but not with Google Maps if it means anything.

I powered off the phone, back on, and got locks in my living room with google in 6 seconds.

I powered off, and back on, used TomTom, and got locks in just under 14 seconds.

Not a very scientific method. second counter on digital watch, but it is still faster than my car!

Of course, I didn't BUY this to be my gps, I have dedicated units for that, but for it being a win mobile PPC and phone.
Hmm

I might try seeing how long after a reset with the phone radio off (airplane mode) to see if it affects lock time.

What I was suggesting to do, was activate GPS, then disable it... DON'T reset, as that fixes the GPS problem in the first place...

I use GPSToday, (non-automatic.) I basically toggle it from the Today Screen to activate GPS... I can see when it gets a lock... it auto-disconnects after about 10 seconds. If I do this about 6 times in a row, TYPICALLY I will lose GPS altogether, or it gets too slow to use...

I wonder if GPSMODE does anything... it clearly doesn't actually activate A-GPS... if it did, we would get sub-five-second locks...

I just RE-loaded the stock Sprint ROM, and let it customize, hard-reset, customize, and hard reset again (apparently, it's recommended to do this.. not sure why.)

So I guess I'll see how well it works... usually after a few days, GPS just starts to crap out, and it's time to flash again... I have no clue what could cause this...

I wonder how fast the Mogul is getting locks? I saw some threads of people claiming <5seconds... same chipset too!

Re: What is the reason for terrible GPS performance on the Vogue?

Ok, mine's stock.

I was bored while watching TV, so I opened google, clicked GPS on and off after each lock somewhere around 20 times. Enough that my GF thought I was nuts.

No issues each time, no softresets.

I do notice 1 thing. I happen to be using the stock battery and boy, using gps, it's power thirsty....

i'm not gonna click anymore tonight. I'll be away all day tomorrow and won't be needing gps on my phone so it'll have 24+ hours before I try whatever test you want me to do.

Re: What is the reason for terrible GPS performance on the Vogue?

My Alltel Vogue generally locks onto 4-5 satts within 30 seconds. I play with my gps all day long turning it on/off repeatedly, and although I have never lost it completely, it does sometimes take several minutes to get a lock, which is quite aggravating since I'm already out driving. I'm using my own rom built from the 19588 kitchen, and I experienced the same performance with the 302 kitchen, I have also used both the 3.42 radio and the 3.37.10 radio both with about the same results.

However, as for Mogul, yesterday I flashed my brothers Mogul with the newest sprint rom, as soon as it booted i installed google maps and within 10 seconds I was locked on 10 sattelites in my living room which my vogue never gets a lock there.

I've heard that its the pri, I've heard that sprint is the only carrier that actually supports gps, so they are the only carrier that provides the agps data, I dont know.

Re: What is the reason for terrible GPS performance on the Vogue?

Interesting... so far, my GPS is working better... can anyone comment on why doing TWO hard-resets after loading a ROM does anything? It's only been one day for me, so it could go downhill... guess we'll see...

Re: What is the reason for terrible GPS performance on the Vogue?

I remember having much better success with 3.37.10 but as I recall .15 was a bit worse and now the 3.42.30 seems to be really bad. Bad weather and indoor environments seem to be the worst. I thought it was ok until I saw a Helio Ocean phone today get a lock within 10 seconds *indoors* while my touch tried and tried to to find a lock with no success whatsoever. I may try to go back to 3.37.10

Re: What is the reason for terrible GPS performance on the Vogue?

Meh, I am using the stock official ROM again, and GPS worked AMAZING for the first day or so, and now, it's as if the sensitivity has dropped bigtime. I was at my friend's house where I used to get 9 sats, inside, and I couldn't even get a lock... I went outside, and I got 4 sats...

Funny thing is, I have had this problem before where GPS seems to "die," and then I hard-reset the phone, and install a GPS program and it works instantly... 5 second locks... then over the course of 24-48 hours, it slowly gets worse and worse until another hard-reset is required...

It's like flags are reset in the radio after a period of time...
