GPS without network service

I have been reading a lot here but I could not find exactly what I have to do to use the internal GPS without celluar network service.

I guess I should put the GPS in standalone mode but I'm not sure how to do it.

Would anyone please tell me?

just put your phone in airplane mode... might be harder to get a lock without the assisted gps though.

I own two HTC Touch...one with service and the other without service.........the one without service which has been flashed with the "leaked Rom" I use it for GPS purpose and it works just fine.

the phone will use assisted gps without a service provider. the government provides the aGPS for 911.

Hey yo, Only 911 will use the cell tower for free to locate the cellular signal to the dispatcher. Carriers will not make u use it for free.

Look at this devices with A-GPS. HTC Touch is not on the list. YESSSS!

I'm sure that's not up to date and that the touch should be listed on there, but:

AGPS is better than normal gps in that it still receives data from gps satellites but also uses an assistance server. Read the wiki, AGPS is not worse than regular gps, it is, in fact, superior....

aGPS= cell tower provides rough data to the phone, then the phone processes, and x-mits to server, server talks to application,, ie.. sprint navigator...

but if you'll notice step one is more of a broadcast, and that's all that these chipsets need to help lock the real gps.

I paraphrased alot, but it was a winter's worth of research, while the chefs were busy with the roms...

The A-GPS is for receivers that have weak signals like the chips on ur phone. That's why the satellite needs assistance to have a solid lock. If this is superior, How come my garmin does not have this technology? Coz My garmin doesn't need it coz the receiver is strong enough to receive satelite signal by itself. Superior because it is working with the satellite to give u a more stable lock eventhough ur chip is strong enough to receive the signal.
Not up to date? did U see the touch pro ans diamond listed too? It doesn't even come out yet. Come on now.
