there are multiple ways to implement a-gps, and it CAN be superior. i.e. for a gps receiver capable of working stand-alone (your garmin, htc vogue, etc), a assistance server enables a quicker lock (i'm sure you've noticed that your garmin will take a few minutes to lock on occasion). you garmin does not have a-gps because it does not have a handy network capable of serving as assitance servers (like a network of cell towers for example).
