I keep mine on my storage card, but yes you can install it straight to your phone. I dont recall if it insists that you setup a backup schedule but make sure you set that up. I have mine set for everyday at 4am.

You don't have to install anything. It's an .exe file tha you can either run off the storage card or main memory.
