Re: I keep hearing that 3.35 radio is not safe...

The assumption for safety that I've heard here on 3.35 radio mainly because the hardware incompability. However, NONE of this ever confirmed, no one so far can tell exactly how the Radio ROM works. The mechanism is unknown, therefore lies the risk.

That being said, flashing ANY radio not specifically made by your carrier for your phone carries risk, I don't think the risk can be compared which one riskier. We don't exactly know what the 3.37 radio from alltell actually works, it might be all different beast as well after all.

The argument that 3.35 radio offer faster lock and stronger signal itself is still widely discussed and disputed. So again, this is all just based on experience, no one know the source or as far as I know decompile the code.

So I agree, use it on your own risk, no matter what radio you use if it is not for your phone and from your carrier.

As far as a different radio once you got past the flashing then you should be fine

I take my comment back. If ICokeMan says it's a bad idea then I listen. The OP didn't mention the authoritive source of the warning.

Re: I keep hearing that 3.35 radio is not safe...

Personally I tried the 3.35... and had a scare where I almost thought I temporarily bricked the phone. It just really didn't seem to make any difference and I was unable to get GPS to work on it, so I moved back to 3.37 and with OMJ's v2, finally got GPS working.

I was not referring to Icokeman. I was just asking what peoples thoughts were on the long term safety. Also I believe Icokeman was refering to just flashing the radio before JD figured out how to "safely" flash it. I just keep heariing conflicting info and was just wondering what the general consenses was. I was certianly not trying to question ICokeman sense I hadn't read that....

Re: I keep hearing that 3.35 radio is not safe...

A lot of people (including me) have been using the 3.35 radio with no problems at all. It's actually better, and works great with the newer ROMS. Flashing the radio is not that big of a deal, it can always be flashed back to the older one, or to newer ones. I'm really enjoying the revA speeds and GPS. It's one of the top reasons I got this phone in the first place. Just follow the instructions that are posted!

**Edit - when I had the ATT TyTn last year, we were flashing radios all the time. Just look on XDA to see how many there are available for that device, they came from carriers all over the world and people just tried different ones to see which gave them the best reception. Flash away, Flash Flash Flash!

Re: I keep hearing that 3.35 radio is not safe...

ICokeman currently has the warning in his Signature. So I think it's still a current warning. I believe he is concerned mostly of the risky process of getting there. I think once you get there you are ok (it's not gonna brick itself in the middle of the night or during a call). I have put 3.35 on and not sure if it was better and I'm currently back on 3.37. I was thinking of putting it back one more time but now I'm not so sure after reading ICokemans warning. If anyone should know what's safe he would.

Re: I keep hearing that 3.35 radio is not safe...

My warning is because i have a phone where i flashed a titan radio and it is bricked (there was a specific testing scenario invloved). It will not be able to just flash back because it is stuck in download mode. I have not been able to retest this theory on the new 2.xx SPL however as i have yet to recieve another vogue for testing, but it should be here soon. I am still reluctant to make this my first test though as my standard recommendation is don't flash any radio roms when it isnt absolutely necessary. The reason for that is because if it does just have a flash error even the radio is a lower level than the SPL so you can't flash back! That being said, if you go GPS, don't go back. If you went to any GPS even titan, don't go to another radio. There are still parts of the radio which i believe do not get overwritten. I know this is the case with titan, but have yet to positively verify on the 2.31 vogue SPL. Additionally, the titan and vogue have different low level setups. The SPL's aren't compatible, so why use something lower level (radio loads SPL) from a different device to load the SPL?

Bottom line: Radio flashes are much more risky than OS flashes and can permantently brick your device, but going GPS is worth a one time risk.

I bricked my 6700/Apache a couple years ago while experimenting with a new method of installing the radio. It took me countless hours of reading through forums before coming to the conclusion that a method had not been developed for that phone just yet.

However, I tried a method created for an entirely different device and it worked just fine. I then came here and made a write-up of how it's done. It has since went through a number of revisions from others, but in regards to your situation I'm sure you have experimented with everything possible and besides have another phone on the way already.

It's good to keep special warnings out though...
People see warnings all over the place here, even for relatively simple things, so it should be made extra-clear that playing with the radio is extra-dangerous.
