Any (concrete) way to backup threaded messages in wm6.1? (I've tried many tricks)

I've used PIMBackup twice regarding threaded messages. The first was from stock Sprint (WM 6.0) ROM to Alltell Radio/Custom ROM (WM 6.1) I had about 1,500 messages inbox and nearly 1,200 out. It took about 20 minutes to sort through them so I just put it on the charger to stop it from going into standby.

I then used PIMBackup again to go from the Alltell/Custom to the unofficial Sprint (WM 6.1) which worked but seemed to fail at the end. PIMBackup would crash after it finished the restore so I wasn't sure it worked but after waiting another 20 minutes for WM to sort them they are all there.

Is there anything else that uses .xml files besides smsimport? I have a backup, but putting them on my new phone, after it gets about halfway through 2007's sent messages, it quits, and this is after about two hours.

What's the absolute latest version of smsimport anyway?
