Question can't sync notes (Outlook 2007 / Vista Home Premium/ WM6)

Purchased an HTC Touch and activated on February 1.

Connected to Laptop via USB running Vista Home Premium and MS Office Enterprise 2007. At first the device wasn't being recognized and WMDC wasn't opening. Couldn't find WMDC on the PC at all so I downloaded it from MS and followed the instructions for installation. It would not install, hanging up at "0 seconds" left each time.

I deleted the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter in Device Manager, disconnected the device and then reconnected it. Using device manager, I was able to 'update driver' which installed WMDC successfully.

WMDC is slow to connect to the device and has to be opened manually, it does not open when the device is connected.

I can sync Contacts, Calendar and Tasks without a problem as long as NOTES is UNCHECKED in WMDC. If I check Notes in WMDC, the sync errors, without any error number or explanation, just "Notes: attention required". If unchecked in WMDC, sync works without an error for Contacts, Tasks and Calendar.

On the device, under ActiveSync options, Notes, files, favorites and OneNote all have gray check boxes next to them.

I have tried all of the following:
  • Deleting the partnership on both pc and device and recreating.
  • Removing the device from device manager and reinstalling the drivers.
  • Soft reset on device.
  • Hard Reset on device.
  • Exchanged the Touch with Sprint per the manufacturer's support suggestion. Issue shows up on the new Touch as well.
  • Made sure notes were stored on device not on the card.
  • Made sure notes options set to typing, not writing.
  • Ran repair on MS Office Enterprise 2007 installation
  • Ran Office Diagnostics.
  • Ran scanpst.exe on .pst file
  • Created a new outlook profile and tried to use that profile to sync. Same results.
  • Found on another forum for WM to rename mapi32.dll, but have been unable to do so even from the command line running as administrator with all other applications closed. My user is an administrator, UAC is turned off, and as I stated, ran the command line as administrator from right click menu, but am unable to rename mapi32.dll. Would this even help?
  • Have tried using both of the splitters included with the device from Sprint and it doesn't make a difference, either.
  • I have tried start/settings/connections/USB to PC/ Enable Advanced network functionality both checked and unchecked. The only difference I can see that this makes is that when unchecked, the device appears in Device Manager as a Mobile Device/ HTC - Touch and when checked, the device shows up in Device Manager as Network Adapter/ Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter #2. Both ways the sync works correctly only if the Notes option is NOT CHECKED.
In WMDC I can check and uncheck all options: Contacts, Calendar, Email, Tasks, Notes, Mobile Favorites, Files, Microsoft Office OneNote. On the Device, everything from Notes down has a gray check box, that is checked if checked on the PC, and unchecked if not checked on the PC, but cannot be checked or unchecked from the device in ActiveSync/options. Strangely enough, OneNote will sync without a problem, even though in ActiveSync/options the check box is gray, and cannot be changed on the device, but can be changed in WMDC.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I have searched these forums and others for days and not found this exact problem anywhere else. The only thing close is that notes cannot be synced OTA.

Sprint support and HTC support have been unable to help at all.

Thanks,
Lisa Durham

i had the same issue, i just gave up!
what program can open notes? NONE!

try it yourself, manually drag a note from the phone to your PC... its proprietary... nothing will open the file...

you can sync microsofts ONEnote, but that is not the same as the default NOTE application that comes with the touch...

if anyone knows a fix/way around this to get PC to open the note file.. let me know!

yep, tried that too

Forgot to mention that one, yes, browsed the phone and pulled the .pwi file off, and of course, couldn't open it on the pc.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. Hopefully we will get a resolution, as I really depend on MS Outlook notes in my day to day work. OneNote is a little overkill for my needs, and isn't kept in the .pst as Outlook notes are.

more information - new devlopment

Until today, I'd never even checked the "files" checkbox under sync settngs in WMDC.

When I did, I immediately got a error:
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue, if you click Quit, the appliction will close immediately.

Here are the details from this error dialog:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

----------end quote

I clicked "continue" and it immediately started trying to sync, but hung up/froze. So I tried to uncheck "files" and WMDC closed down.

Upon re-opening it says "connecting" but hte device shows that it's syncing.

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!
