I believe the Mobile version of Windows Live Messenger does not have the capability of IMing Yahoo! contacts.

see their responses on my question (I've tried it, it does not work):

Thank you for writing back to Windows Live Mobile Technical Support. My name is Teddy and I am here to assist you. I understand that your yahoo contacts are not showing online when you log in to your mobile device. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Sang, I am sorry to inform you that we have a Technical problem with your specific account on our server and we are unable to resolve the problem at this time.

The best and quickest way to get your account back up and running is to do the following:
- Delete the account
- Recreate your account with your current user name and device ID number

We have already deleted your account. Please create a new account by following the steps below:

1. Using a PC, go to http://mobile.live.com/signup/signup2.aspx
2. Choose your Wireless service provider from the dropdown menu.
3. When asked, place a check mark on the "My device has text messaging" box.
4. Enter your Device Email Address.
5. Click on "Next."
6. A text (SMS) message will then be sent to your mobile device containing a 4-digit Confirmation Code.
7. Enter the confirmation code you received on the box specified on the webpage.
8. Click on "Next."
9. Agree to the End-User License Agreement to finish the sign up process.

After you have created a Windows Live Mobile account, you need to setup your account to receive IM alerts on your device and you will be shown as Mobile on your friends' devices:

1. Sign in to your Windows Live Messenger
2. Under the "Tools", choose "Options"
3. Go to the "Phone" tab.
4. Check the option: "Allow people on my contacts list to send messages to my mobile device"
5. Click on Ok

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using Windows Live Mobile.

Sincerely,

Teddy

I'm not saying that they are lying, maybe they are confusing it with the Windows Live Messenger Mobile Web version found at http://mobile.live.com (from your device).

I was just saying I have never seen a Yahoo! contact on my Windows Live Mobile Messenger, as it is, the service is very flaky... I was getting ready to run some tests and I signed on my Yahoo! account. While my Windows Live screen name shows online on my Yahoo! contacts list, my Yahoo! screen name does not show online on my Windows Live contacts list.

I could send messages back and forth, but it displayed as if the Yahoo! contact was invisible or appear offline.

Also, from this quote...

5. Click on Ok
I assume that what they are trying to do is help you set up your phone on the regular version of Windows Live Messenger so that when you are offline you will show under the Mobile usergroup instead of Offline and your friends will be able to send you messages to your phone from their Windows Live Messenger. You then receive these as a text message and can reply to them.

I use this all the time, my friends IM me from their computer, I get a text message (usually from weird numbers, like 56000081) that has their e-mail, nickname, and message; then reply to that weird number and they will get it on their PC.
