You know when you use a traditional fax and you hear the "Noise" it makes when you are dialing and connecting?

That is an analog modem "speaking" digital over an analog line. Say you have a "Digital" home phone service they actually go to the trouble of emulating an analog line so oldschool equipment will function. "Dial Up" #s are also simply oldschool analog access lines to the servers.

Your PPC is a Digital device and does not include the ability to create a direct analog connection.

The PPC connects to the SPCS (or other) network, then the network via its servers connects either your call or internet request to the regular telco or DNS host.

Phone as Modem: Use the included USB cable, or Bluetooth Wireless technology, to connect with a PC for Internet and email access.

please tell me what this is for then?

As Koolaid mentioned this is for using the phone as a modem to dial your PCS ISP (I have not seen an alternate connection other than carrier data work).

It can clearly be confusing.

Its less expensive to get unlimited data ($15) and learn to "tether" your PC to PPC as oppose to signing up for a Data Modem Plan ($59).

Re: Trying to dialup

Just an interesting note... the VZAccess manual (a PDF) mentions that the phone can be used as a 14.4kbps modem... Not sure if it meant this phone specifically or not (can't find the darn CD) or that it's correct.

(Long time listerner first time caller... be gentle.)
