HELP: Repeating SMS/text notification/alert when reading message

I get the usual icon at the top of the screen when an SMS/text message comes in. I dismiss the notification but when I open Messaging and click on the message to open it, the icon reappears on the top of the screen and I get re-notified.

It would almost seem like another message was incoming coincidentally as I opened the message, but it's not. And if I close and reopen a text message the notification comes up again and again.

Each time I close the message though, the notification disappears. For some reason, opening an SMS message triggers a notification. (???)

Any ideas? It's driving me nuts!!!!!!!!

Without a ready fix available for this odd little glitch I decided to simply hard reset and restore from a 2 day old backup. When restoring my mail settings the problem remained so I tried to re-hard boot and restore again but WITHOUT the mail settings. After recreating the mail settings manually everything seemed to work as normal.
I still don't know what caused the problem and what the actual fix would have been but this did seem to take care of the issue.
