It's possible that he has Treo Alert in his Startup folder. He would see it at 85MB (since the startup folder programs load first) then as everything really loads he would see a jump up in memory usage.

Remember, when your homescreen first loads up it is just a "snapshot" so to speak. It then loads all the programs and you can actually use the phone.

Thank you Musicman, you actually gave me a possible explanation.

I just wasn't understanding how it was possible to have so much free RAM.

But yeah... one of my biggest gripes about the Touch is that it takes roughly 45 seconds after I see the today screen before the device is ready to be used and using it before that causes it to freeze 9 times out of 10.

Agreed.

The funny thing is that I didn't even customize my Mogul like a lot of you did... really only used it for Opera and stuff... yet I'd STILL notice that my memory was consistently below 10MB...

thats crazy... I had tons of stuff on mine and it never dropped below 18mb.. and I found that as a problem. If this is the memory that majority of people are talking about... then damn.

Mine would get so bad that I'd have like 1.75MB available running just the text messages app, activesync, opera mobile, and HTC Home as my only today item.
