EV is EVDO (DO the stands for data only) 1X is 1X digital. That is what the voice on CDMA technology (Verizon and Sprint) run on. When data is trasmitted on 1X, it's the equivlent of dial up. Now EVDO is the CDMA equivlent of fast dsl/slow cable. One bar of EV is always better than four of 1X. Hope I answered your question.

So let me get this right: For voice transfers, 1X is used because it is for voice transfers, whereas the EVDO is for data transfers. For data transfer, EVDO is better than 1X, because the EVDO is considered a broadband type of service, whereas the 1X is synonymous to dial-up. Then why did my treo stay on EV during a voice call? I know you might not know the answer, I was just seeing if anyone else might know?

why does 1x seem to drain my battery so quickly? If i leave the touch in my basement for a few hours, the battery dies because its getting 2 bars on 1x. is this possible?

It could be because data transfer are slower, which means that they will take longer and use resources longer. This is just a wild guess though...

Another reason that the battery might be dying faster in 1x is that the phone continues to look for EVDO signal actively if there is even just a faint signal. Going in and out of roaming and 1X to EVDO are the main reasons people complaint for poor battery life.
