EV is EVDO (DO the stands for data only) 1X is 1X digital. That is what the voice on CDMA technology (Verizon and Sprint) run on. When data is trasmitted on 1X, it's the equivlent of dial up. Now EVDO is the CDMA equivlent of fast dsl/slow cable. One bar of EV is always better than four of 1X. Hope I answered your question.
