1X or EV...which is better?

Every time I make a a call I notice that it changes from EV to 1X. Now when I had my Treo700wx, it would make my calls under the EV symbol and change to the 1X whenever signal strength was weak, example driving through countryside. When I'm sitting at home I get at least 3-4 bars under EV. Actually it stays under EV all day long. Even incoming calls come in under 1X. I thought EV was a better connection than 1X?

Does anyone else's phone dial out and receive calls under 1X and not EV?
