SD card corrupt?

I dont know whats happening but every so often my sd card decides to get all screwed up and I dont know whats happening. Somties the files and file names become jibberish but the time it looks like i only have file there. Anyone have a clue?

Musicman247 11-09-2007 05:44 PM

Is the card fully inserted into the slot? There have been several reviews stating that you have to use the stylus to press the card completely into the slot.

I have had the same thing happen, but I thought it had something to do with card export II. In any case, it doesnt appear as if the sd card is truly damaged, and in my case a soft reset bring all back to normal. Are you using that? If so, try to safely eject the card from xp system tray. Since Ive been doing that, no problems so far

rdwing 11-09-2007 08:08 PM

Mine just did it today! Any idea on how to recover the files?

VW 11-09-2007 09:35 PM

A reset should fix it

biggggant 11-09-2007 09:56 PM

card clicks in place, i did 20 soft resets lol, no card software i just exchanged my card hoping the card was bad

VW 11-09-2007 10:31 PM

Interesting. Ive actually had it happen with two seperate cards.

jhale83 11-09-2007 10:57 PM

Count me in too. I lost some pics that I had stored. It didn't do anything to my music but I did lose my playlists. This is weird!

Polen 11-09-2007 11:37 PM

Are yall using the microSD that it came with or another you had or bought?

biggggant 11-10-2007 12:30 AM

my card a 2gb sandisk that worked flawlesly in my mogul since the mogul came out

rdwing 11-10-2007 12:35 AM

Separate Lexar 2gig MicroSD. Seems its a known problem...do a search on xda.

dew.man 11-10-2007 09:06 AM

SanDisk Micro SD 2gb - worked fine on 3 previous devices, scrambled once, fixed with soft reset.

biggggant 11-10-2007 12:17 PM

well the replacement has worked all night (knock on wood)

rdwing 11-10-2007 07:33 PM

It's totally borked my card. I have to send it back to lexar now.

storino03 11-11-2007 04:37 AM

Mine was PQI. I have to send it back to Newegg sometime.

ok new card got corrupt sometimes between last night and this morninig. this sux. one thing i think it maybe is when use the hibernate command with quick menu. Usually its fine than I run hibernate and than sometime after that i notice my card is screwed... I'm not sure if its a coincidence or not

rglover 11-11-2007 03:53 PM

My card was corrupted after I changed my settings on my email so that attachments would be saved to the card. Not sure this caused the problem, but it happened immediately after I changed the settings and then used my email. I reset the device several times with no change in the SD card, but I was able to reformat the card and it works fine and fortunately I had copied my card to my hard drive so I was able to restore it. I have changed the settings on email and now it seems fine.

VW 11-12-2007 05:08 PM

Mine corrupted yet again, and I really didnt do anything to cause it. Was listening to BT music listening to Pocket Player with music on the microsd card. 6gb sandisk. Once again, a reset fixed the issue.

missing (lost) folders from my sd card. what's up?

i have had quite a few wm devices and have read a few threads about people loosing files and folders from there sd cards. this has happened to me for the first time on the touch. in fact it has happened twice since i got the device. i dont know if it is the sd card i am using or the device it self. i got a 2 gb card when i got the phone.

i am not missing everything just some stuff. maybe half of what was on there. i do keep a backup on my pc. something i learn from the 6700 days when the sd card would pop out and you would just loose it. my backup works but that is not the issue.

does anyone know why this happens? is there fault in the type of card one buys? has anyone else lost stuff off there sd card while using the touch?

thanks, cody

pjhurth 11-17-2007 05:16 PM

This has been the only issue I have with the Touch. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes soft-resetting puts everything right again, but on a couple of occasions that didn't help and I've lost data. The card I'm having trouble with (1GB, not SDHC) is a card I know to be good since it worked without problem in my Mogul for a month or so.

Several times after noticing the problem I've run Pocket Mechanic scandisk and it's found lost clusters and other problems with the FAT file system. Sometimes repairable, sometimes not.

It's quite frustrating since I can't count on the card to securely hold backups, etc...

jhale83 11-17-2007 05:25 PM

I'm having the same problems with both the card that shipped with the phone and a 2GB Lexar card I was using with my Mogul for months (it never had this problem in the Mogul).

I've been wondering if there is something wrong with my Touch because it doesn't seem like everyone has this problem with their Touch.

pjhurth 11-17-2007 05:39 PM

It seems to be quite a common problem. I've seen reports of SD card corruption of one type or another on several different forums.

It's possible that since this phone has so much built-in storage that many users simply aren't using the card except for larger files.

I use mine to store my Newsbreak RSS feed data - a mix of many small files and a few larger ones like podcasts that changes pretty often.

codyppc 11-17-2007 11:09 PM

what about all the sprint music that i saved onto my card. now it's gone and no way to get it back. crap

5 different wm device and i never had this problem. i didn't think i needed to keep the copies on my pc. the biggest problem is the only stuff i can't replace from the one pc backup i have is the music that cost me money.

You can re-download Sprint music to your PC though, right? I just checked and some music downloaded on my Samsung A900 is still available for me when I sign into Sprint's site.

I hope a solution is found soon - I hate not being able to rely on the card as a backup if I need it.

this morning has been the 3rd time my sd card has messed up on me. this time it is different. look at the pic...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...0/screen-1.jpg

i dont know if i want to return the touch itself, but it does make me want to return the sd card and not use one. specially if i can't count on it.

Did it return to normal after a soft reset?

no. i have tried softresets and removing the card and reinstalling it each time (3) that this has happened.

the first 2 times stuff just disappeared. the last time it was rewritten.

i have never touched the encryption either

dew.man 11-18-2007 03:40 PM

Similar problems here. Both a SanDisk 2 GB MicroSD, as well as a 6 GB SDHC Micro. Couple of times all is well after a soft reset, but once all the contents of My Documents was gone with no way to recover.

Only problem I have with the device, and is VERY frustrating as it is a MAJOR issue...

ycats 11-18-2007 03:46 PM

I'm in the same boat with the 512 that came with it...........all data gone.

Sliq1 11-18-2007 03:48 PM

go to music store, go to the player then websync you will get your music back

biggggant 11-18-2007 03:50 PM

ok i was having the same problems as you cody my sd card look liked that in my phone or in my computer. I have stopped using the hibernate function in quick menu and for the past 4-7 days I have not had those issues hope that might help

hmmm, what and where exactly is this?

biggggant 11-18-2007 10:10 PM

nevermind if you dont know about that, it must not be your problem lol...... But the hibernate feature is part of quick menu and it serves the same purpose like the oxios hibernate to recover some ram

jhale83 11-18-2007 10:47 PM

I just had it happen to me again as well. It's happening almost once a day for me now and it's really annoying. I think I'm going to leave it like this and pay a visit to the Sprint store tomorrow to let them look at it. Has anyone else visited a store or called support on this issue yet?

EDIT: I do think it's interesting that I can still access my music that is stored on the card in WMP.

jhale83 11-19-2007 12:25 AM

So a new development on my situation. I decided to sync my phone with my PC to see if I could see the storage card files on my PC. Before I connected the phone, all the folders were weird looking like codyppc mentioned above but when I connected it not only could I see the files on the PC but they also showed up again on the phone. So if anyone has this problem again, please try syncing and seeing if they show up again.

Pibe38 11-19-2007 02:04 AM

Juse writing me name down, this happened to me too. I guess we've found the big issue with this device.

Mine is a combo of the issues. Many folders have disappeared and some random files were created. These files are 6+ MB, which I had none of the size on my card, the corruption seems to have merged my folders into corrupted filed.

My Live Search folder is there and the name is not corrupted either. There's also another random folder. This is very, VERY bad.

pjhurth 11-19-2007 10:23 AM

Anyone tweak their card or system cache settings?

Have any of us experiencing this issue done anything via registry edits or utilities (SKTools, MemMaid or similar) to alter any of the default WM cache settings? I have.

This sounds like a problem with the phone's cache becoming corrupt. Perhaps a soft-reset flushed the cache, temporarily returning the card display to normal. Perhaps every so often the corrupt cache data also gets written back to the card causing data loss.

i noticed this for the second time friday. i reloaded my sd card and then did a hard reset. i was going to run the device stock for a while to see if that was the problem.

it happened agian on saturday with nothing on the device at all. completely out of the box state. stock sd card this time as well.

there is just something wrong with the device. i am going to wait untill it happens agian and then take it in to a sprint store and have them swap it out.

That's a kick in the shorts - otherwise this is the most flawless PPC I've ever owned.

Throw my hat in the ring. I had an issue Sunday where I was unable to launch poutlook at all. Couldn't view mail, couldn't send mail...I tried everything. I had not added any software that should have messed with my mail at all, and in fact, it was working when I went to bed the night before. Woke up, not working...anyhoo...I hard reset and started from scratch. 3/4 of the way through reloading my apps, I see that half of my folders are missing on my 4gb SD card, and 2/3 of the ones that are left have corrupted names and symbols on them. I tried to open the corrupted folders, but no-go. So I soft reset (with a pit in my stomach), and the card came back after that. I am just waiting for it to happen again, since it from the sounds of it here, it will.
