I agree but deleting and/or corrupting files on a storage card is a pretty HUGE flaw! I love this phone and hope there is a fix for this problem soon. I'm also thinking about taking my to the store to get it swapped out but I'm afraid it's a problem with all of them.

Agreed - I didn't mean to minimize it, just to say that otherwise I've had very few issues.

On previous devices I'd have at least one serious issue like this and 10 other minor or mid-range problems.

I guess I just have low expectations. :D

I've had the XV6700, the Mogul and now the Touch and I know what you mean about low expectations. I thought maybe, just maybe that the Touch was void of serious problems for a few days and then the storage card issue happened. Why can't we get a phone that just works?!?!

This sounds like a problem with the phone's cache becoming corrupt. Perhaps a soft-reset flushed the cache, temporarily returning the card display to normal. Perhaps every so often the corrupt cache data also gets written back to the card causing data loss.

I have not made any registry changes at all, only installed apps. So that's not it.

There's also a post about a user having this issue with a stock device.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a real issue with the device :angry7:

jhale83 11-19-2007 02:13 PM

You would think with an issue this serious there would be tons of posts but there aren't. It makes me wonder if there are lots of defective phones but not all have the problem. Just out of curiosity, what's the manufacture date on your Touch? Mine is 10/23/2007.

10/4/07

I wonder how many people with the device really use the SD card. We're all "power users" who use most or all (or more than all :) ) of the device's functionality. Your standard business user who gets it for e-mail and calendaring might never even pop the card in.

I guess my point is, just because there aren't more reports of this doesn't mean it's not widespread. I'd be curious if anyone can report using the card on a frequent basis *without* seeing this issue.

By the way, I've seen a lot of reports on different boards about "pictures disappearing", or messaging having trouble. Since those items both can store data on the card, I wouldn't be a bit surprised that those problems have the same root cause.

codyppc 11-19-2007 03:38 PM

10/5 here. i agree with maybe it's not a common issue. other wise we would see more action in this thread.

ycats 11-19-2007 03:40 PM

Last night I took the card out, blew on it, put back in, soft reset.........has been working fine ever since.

So all we have to do is give our card a blow...nevermind! LOL!

I'll have to try that next time.

I had not added any software that should have messed with my mail at all, and in fact, it was working when I went to bed the night before. Woke up, not working...anyhoo...I hard reset and started from scratch. 3/4 of the way through reloading my apps, I see that half of my folders are missing on my 4gb SD card, and 2/3 of the ones that are left have corrupted names and symbols on them. I tried to open the corrupted folders, but no-go. So I soft reset (with a pit in my stomach), and the card came back after that. I am just waiting for it to happen again, since it from the sounds of it here, it will.

I can confirm this exact behavior - it's happened five times now. I know I have a problem when email won't open...

First time: I found corrupted folders on the card, and couldn't delete them. I finally used Pocket Mechanic to reformat the card.

Since then: When the problem occurs, I delete the Inbox folder on the card, and poutlook starts working again. Downside: The device no longer has the email attachments (the have to be redownloaded).

meatlocker 11-19-2007 04:57 PM

Ah, interesting. I DO have my attachments going to the card, so I will follow your suggestion the next time it happens, storyr.

Its funny, the buildup that everyone had for this device...that somehow, some way, it would be free from defects or bugs. Ah well, even the prettiest girls have a mole somewhere, I guess.

Jeratain 11-20-2007 02:22 AM

I have a SanDisk 6GB card that was just wiped randomly.. no registry hacks, no special software installed outside of HHC.

jhale83 11-20-2007 10:19 AM

Just happened to me once again. This time everything is missing with the exception of a file that I can't open. I've been getting both variables of the problem - files being jumbled but recoverable via soft reset and files just disappearing but still taking up space on the card. This is EXTREMELY frustrating and may lead me to go back to my Mogul.

I'm going to try and go to the Sprint Store over my lunch break to have them take a look at it. I will let you know what I find out.

It is frustrating, and it happened to me. I think the difference is whether or not you write to the card when it is in that jumbled state. Mine evidently was in that jumbled state last night when SPB backup ran.. Wahhh.. now its not recoverable... Good thing I use syncbackSE and Card Export to back up my contents (-mp3 although that is going to change).

dew.man 11-21-2007 01:11 PM

So where do we stand with this? How many of the people who were having problems have been able to clear this up? Have any of you swapped the device?

I've reinstalled everything to main memory and am not storing anything to sd other than manual backups, and it appears to be running very stable (for now)...

I went to the Sprint store and they swapped mine for a new one. So far so good (knock on wood) but it's only been 24 hours since I got the new one so I'm not going to say it's totaly fixed.

If it does happen to me again I think I may have to say bye bye to the Touch and go back to my Mogul since they are supposedly posting a fixed ROM for it the end of this month.

oh my god. your looking for the perfect device... you'll never find it. lol. the mogul, update or not, will always have more problems than the touch on it's worst day. memory alone is enough for me to never go back.

You're right, I am looking for it and I also know it won't come. But...a smaller amount of memory I can deal with. Not being able to utilize a storage card I cannot! One of the main things I use my phone for is listening to music through my BT headphones and my BT car cd player. If you can't rely on a storage card, you can't listen to music on your phone. I wish they would just put 8GB (or more) storage inside the phone and it would solve many problems!

hasn't happened agian for 5 days now.

i have done a hard reset, reloaded all my apps and reloaded my sd card. just the way it was when this all happened. i am waiting for it to do it agian and then i am taking it in to sprint for a swap. if it doesn't happen before 12/3 i will take it in anyhow and have it swaped. i feel this way i can get the newest manufacture date. hopefully that will do the trick.

other wise i will just wait for the fix to come in a ROM update. the device is too new for HTC/Sprint to know about the bug/bugs. other than this i have no complaints. now that i know i need to keep an upto date backup on my PC this is no big deal.

i still love my touch.

lol. they do... iphone. lol. but look at all the downsides of that phone.

man, i understand your concerns. dont get me wrong. you got to look at it like this. every phone will have something wrong. and you will always have updates to fix that. this phone (touch) is looking pretty darn good for a "first ship ROM" and will only be looking better in the future. if the users here dont figure something out i'm am sure HTC/SPrint will. think about it. sprint's biggest concern is for you to buy there music. if the device has a storage card then it has to be stored there. if the sd card is a problem, people might quite buying music. that is something sprint really doesn't want to happen. as soon as sprint finds out about this bug they will be all over htc for a fix.

Well, as I mentioned above my replacement Touch hasn't experienced the problem we were having. I can tell you by the reaction that I got from the guys at the store that they did not know about this problem and it was listed as a known issue. I'm just hoping that my original one was defective and that it won't happen on the new one. I really do love this phone and it's been as close to the perfect phone as it can be for me...except for the storage card. Hopefully, it was just a defective phone.

BTW...I thought about the iPhone for about 2 seconds and then laughed it off!

Have you tried taking your Touch into the store or have you not been experiencing the issue with your files disappearing anymore?

EDIT: Disregard the last part. Didn't see your post above...

diomark 11-22-2007 01:30 PM

this just happened to me again.. usually when it happens I can reboot and it's back.. this time... no data:( (or rather corrupted data)

Pocket mechanic found a bunch of lost clusters/discarded...

sprintrjm 11-22-2007 01:45 PM

thought mine was fine

I could not get into my messaging program on my phone to check my gmail and yahoo mail.

my messages are set to save to my sd card.

I poped out the card and i was able to access my messaging, pop it back in and i cant get to the messaging.

formated the card on my computer, had a problem the first few times, had a corrupt inbox folder.

finally formatted it, then formatted it on my touch with pocket mechanic.

PS. I have a sandisk 4gb hdsd card.

Sounds like the touch has an issue with the sd card and messaging.

Hopefully i dont have any more problems :(

meatlocker 11-22-2007 01:51 PM

Yep, happened to me again for the second time this morning. Couldn't open Messaging, with attachments set to save to card. Read somewhere else that deleting the Inbox folder on the card fixes the issue, and lets you change the settings to save to the unit. This worked for me. Hopefully Sprint will address this problem. I see it as the only major issue with the Touch right now, and I have been using mine for over a week.

malimal 11-26-2007 07:01 PM

I just have my files disappeared. every one except my music folder and a WMDRM folder that keeps coming back every time i delete it.

diomark 11-27-2007 10:53 AM

Is sprint aware of this problem?

I'm at a customer this week - and my micro-sd got corrupted taking my gps maps with it - it caused me quite a bit of a headache to get there without my gps maps!:(

the same thing happens to me... i sync my music with media player and a day after i see and the whole memory card is deleted with 4 files named kjihikh; jhohiol; hdofiah; or some sort of thing like that. i try to reset the phone last night and this morning the card was deleted. so that didn't help.. also my phone keep going to silent mode for some reason, i did installed ringo an application to be used to set ringtones... would that have anything to do with it?
anyone that might have a solution to this please drop me a line!

VW 11-27-2007 08:46 PM

I figured out that I had a theme on the sd card and that seemed to be causing problems with me. Since I movbed it to main mem, no probs. Nonetheless I am a bit leery about starting the nightly backups as it seems if you write to a corrupt card, its gone, whereas if you dont write a reset fixes it, so i just run a backup everyfew days after I check to make sure card isnt corrupt

jhale83 11-27-2007 09:51 PM

I'm still experiencing issues with my replacement Touch. With the replacement though, it comes back after a soft reset luckily. However, it happens AT LEAST once a day (it's happened twice today already). Really frustrating!

j10376 11-28-2007 04:34 PM

Known Bug

The storage card issue is a confirmed bug, HTC will release a fix in january for this issue. The problem with this bug is it is hard to repeat. I hav ehad my touch for a few weeks without ant issues and all of a sudden I went into resco to look at a file on my SD and there it was folders and files corrupted.

ycats 11-28-2007 04:36 PM

cool......maybe they can fix the phone app. from popping up after you exit a program....very annoying.

Go to hklm\software\microsoft\shell and change ShowTitleBarClock from 1 to 2

Got nailed by the Storage Card Mystery today. Came here of course to see who else and at least I'm in good company. All files gone. Time to reinstall a few thing and resync the music and podcasts. Darn computers!

pjrey 01-13-2008 03:59 AM

just read this topic... i have never had the problem.. i use my SD card..(512 that came with it)... had it for a month now...
i wonder if it has something to do with sprint music? DRM files?? sounds strange i know.. but this whole situation is pretty strange.... try and find something in common... i just use mine for my camera/ pics/vids, backups (using PIM backup), and doom/packman/smbro NES's... thats it... (oh, and back up CAB files)

does eveyrone who is having this problem have sprint music on their card?

Funny, just this morning I was like you. Never had a problem. I imagine its like a hard drive, either it has failed or will.

mr.jcarter 01-13-2008 04:31 PM

Is everybody's problem just the content of the SD showing up as random characters? Because the issue I'm having is the SD card isn't showing up AT ALL on my device, on my computer via activesync. I've tried soft resets, hard resets, I even reflashed to no avail.

mr.jcarter 01-14-2008 02:26 AM

bumpity bump

sonicbo0m 01-14-2008 04:03 AM

ditto

Hey all, just had this happen to me. All I did was switch the saving of pictures and videos from device to storage card and EVERY picture/video was deleted from just that day. All my music and previous pictures/videos were fine....none of my music is from the sprint store just in case any one thinks that's the relation....hope there's a fix soon....

Oh and as a side note....the card's memory is showing that it's being used...like as if those pics/vids were still there....not sure if any one else is having that same issue.:angry7:

mr.jcarter 01-14-2008 02:13 PM

How many people have had there devices replaced by Sprint due to these SD problems? I plan on taking mine up to the store this afternoon...

Ph33zy 01-14-2008 03:33 PM

Just so you guys know, I updated to the latest Alltel ROM and the SD issues are still there. This is getting to be a realy problem with me.
