If it is a POP3 account you can do as suggested above. Get a free Mail2Web Exchange account and forward your POP3 address to the mail2web address. This will give you your work e-mail in real time and with less battery consumption.

I don't know about killing it since I have not used it, but it's all about the time interval you use. The more often it checks, the more the faster the battery drains.
