Two things.

1) Tech specs on the qualcomm chipset state that the chipset is designed with GPS systems built in requiring NO Additional hardware for functionality. Its supposed to allow the systems to be able to integrate a GPS system easily. The antenna debate is solved by the techspecs which show the qualcomm chipset uses a triplexer to use GPS, PCS and Phonehe signals out the same antenna.

2) When I looked under "My Online Tools" the other day, I suddenly have a new linke to "Business Mobility tools" Inside there I am asked to grant consent for navigation software programs to use my phone for GPS navigation.

I am a firm believer that the phones have GPS and were just waiting for sprint to figure out a way to charge us to use it.

Wink Official Wikipedia info on gpsOne

So from what I've read, the gpsOne or GPS-A is something that has 4 modes. What we want to see is Verizon or Sprint to unlock the "Standalone" mode which allows the GPS in the phone to operate soley off of satallite based signals and not utilize the cell towers in combination, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GpsOne

What it does

gpsOne can operate in 4 modes:
  • Standalone - Your handset has no connection to the network, and uses only the GPS satellite signals it can currently receive to try and establish a location.
  • MS Based - Your handset is connected to the network, and uses the GPS signals + a location signal from the network.
  • MS Assisted - Your handset is connected to the network, uses GPS signals + a location signal then relays its 'fix' to the server, which then uses the signal strength from your phone to the network towers to further plot your position. You can still maintain voice communication in this scenario, but not 'Internet/Network service' ie Web Browser, IM, streaming TV etc..
  • MS Assisted/Hybrid - Same as above, but network functionality remains. Normally only in areas with exceptional coverage.

There are some extremely smart people in this forum, I keep wondering why no one has been able to unlock gps and/or wifi on their own. Is it because of the legal ramifications?

There are no GPS drivers on the device. We'd have to have the right drivers to get the device to recognize the GPS and AFAIK, no MSM7500-based PPC has activated GPS yet.

There is no Wifi... In the FCC tests, no Wifi was tested on this phone. If HTC did not test it with the FCC, it is not on the phone.

Got to wait till Q1 2008 (whenever that maybe) for the GPS update.

More than likely...yes. Making a backup may not be a bad idea, it depends on how much the upgrade alters the OS.

To be safe, just be ready to re-install everything all over
