All she really wants is a reliable phone (this IS our home phone), access to her contacts, a shopping list-type program and the occasional web access. I don't want to get this phone if the hardware/software is still problematic even after the upgrade.

I'm planning to put NFSFAN's 6.5 21864 SYS on it as it sounds the most stable.

I look forward to your responses.

Thank you.

I got this for my wife for Christmas, and I also have NFSFAN's 6.5 21864 SYS and I like it very much. Very impressed with it. She loves the phone but I think I've used it more than her. Only complaint about it is that it's initial GPS lock is very SLOW. Once it gets one however it seems like it's MUCH faster at re-locking until you reboot/reset the device. Otherwise I'm very glad I got it for her.

Re: Should I buy a HTC Touch?

Hi All,

Thanks for everyone's input! This is a great community. Based on everyone's input I just picked up the Touch today from Bell and finished updating it to the latest GPS Radio (3.42.50). Once my number gets ported over I'll attempt the NFSFAN's 6.5 21864 SYS/XIP V1.00 GENERIC CARRIER ROM. I still need to do a bunch of reading before I'm brave enough to try. Any words of wisdom?

Thanks again.

Re: Should I buy a HTC Touch?

I heard that the Touch use to be $0 on a 3 yr term but all the prices increased at Bell. I paid $80 + taxes. BTW you wrote a nice guide on unlocking and upgrading... I might try it out.

I followed the instructions in the first post here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370

I am on USCC and when I received the Vogue/Touch it didn't even have a GPS radio in it. But your's does so you should just need to use the "Vogue_unlocker_MFG_2.31.exe" file to unlock your Vogue. It's very easy to use, just make sure you read through the entire first post and understand what to do before you do it cuz it's easier to read a post a few times than it is to UNbrick your device

Re: Should I buy a HTC Touch?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the links! After <2 weeks with the new phone, I couldn't wait any longer and last night (a long night) I unlocked it and put NFSFAN's 6.5 21864 SYS/XIP V1.00 GENERIC CARRIER ROM on the phone. The wife's pretty happy with it so far.

Here is what's on it currently:
NFSFAN's 6.5 21864 SYS/XIP V1.00 GENERIC CARRIER ROM (flashed 3X's)
Bell Carrier Cab (dcd Bell Carrier 20081031.cab)
NFSFAN Vogue CDMA Dialer - Diamond Skin.cab
the weather fix
G-Alarm (Last Free Edition)
Handy Shopper

I have do have a couple more questions:
1) What is everyone using as the main interface? I change from the default (scrolling up/down) to TouchFlo. I assume that TouchFlo consumes more memory right? Anyone experiencing missed calls/issues with TouchFlo enabled? TouchFlo is prettier but I might get her just to use the default for stability stake.
2) Since I'm on Bell do I need to install the Self Server Application Cab? I'm not sure of what it does so I didn't put it on.
3) Internet browser: default IE or Opera?

Thanks again.

Re: Should I buy a HTC Touch?

1. Touchflo(manila) probably does use more memory than Titanium but you'll just have to see which one you like best and/or which seems to work better.

2. I dunno about this one.

3. I use Opera 9.5 for most things and Skyfire for websites with flash video. IE rarely gets used for me except for mobile tailored sites.
Hope that helps.

i'm on vin's rom (fantastic, tried andrewweltons, ezthunder1's, vins, nfsfans, and going to try to cook my own if i get bored of modern warfare 2)... so i have a boatload of roms under my belt.
1) yes, it takes WAY more memory, but version 2.0 is stable and rarely crashes.
2) idk about this, i don't have data...
3) Use opera, tried ie, hated it, opera mobile 9 is nice.

Re: Should I buy a HTC Touch?

If I were you, before flashing Android, try running it off your SD card so you can see if you like it better than some of the 6.5.x ROMs that are our right now. I've tried most of the Android builds and in my opinion the fastest and most stable is Android SenseHERO 1.4. As far as the 6.5.x ROMs, I would for sure go with Vin's 23506 v_4.

I like TouchFLO a lot better than Titanium, I've never run into anymore issues with TF over Ti. Also, you may want to try the new Opera 10.
