Sure it is, it is part of Activesync. It is there from the PPC days when you actually bought a PPC separate from a phone, so the PPC had no net access, but you might want to grab your daily dose of news from the net to read while you are in the can.

Because something on his phone needs to access the net and he has a crappy data plan. For example what if he wanted configure email on the phone but didn't want to use his crappy data plan.

Do you really think he doesn't realize he can access the net on his phone without being connected to the computer? The only purpose for connecting the computer then saying you are using the internet on my phone in the same sentence is to use the computer's net connection.

Should really consider getting a data plan. why gets a smartphone without a data plan and then worry about going over 2mb? i am sure even if it;s not the old SERO bargains, any data plan is better than going over and paying exorbitant fee for the per kb.

Yes it is possible to even make your laptop work as a AP. The only problem is that you must use another NIC (like the wired NIC) in order to get the initial connection you want to share. So for example, you'd get internet through your wired LAN and share it through your wireless so your phone can connect to it.

Just google it, it is really easy to set up.

It is possible as I had Roadrunner Turbo setup on my home pc via cable modem. Plugged in my HTC Mogul and was able to surf on the phone using the RoadRunner connection.
