New to smart phones: TP is 1st - these things "normal"?

So previously I've used only what would be considered "dumb" phones until recently when I got a TP and in short, I love it. While getting used to it was a longer task (and Im normally pretty good with technology), it is so amazing. I use it entirely stock - no new roms, OS or anything. Just what USCC gave me and I run from there.I've installed just a few programs but email, brief internet browsing, scheduling, notes, etc are what I use it for, and I know it can do even more!

However, I have a few things that I have been told by another smart phone user are "normal" but I have a hard time believing it. I have to "soft" reset at least once a day or once every other day. It just "jams up" while using. For instance, I'll be doing something and I'll click or tell the phone to do something else and it will partially load the next program but stop. I keep my memory pretty low - I close programs when done and check make sure they are close. It will freeze in the middle of the night and require restarting (I learned the hard way to not trust it as an alarm clock that way).

I've had it for 2 months and have had to "hard" restart it twice. It just would NOT turn on. I get what looks like a BIOS POST screen, the USCC splash screen and sometimes it just stays there, sometimes it makes it to the Windows Mobile screen and stops, or sometimes it gets to the windows mobile desktop and freezes. TouchFlo never loads. Sometimes I can access the start menu but nothing loads and it will not connect to my network (WiFi or USCC).

So is this normal and to be expected? Like I said, I do not really do anything crazy on the phone, haven't changed anything, and I keep my program list as clear as possible.

Thanks.

that's kind of normal for the TP stock rom... there are just some things that make it inefficient
that's why people flash custom roms :P
but you can tweak it to perform like a custom rom... i'd start by checking out the "touch pro cleanup" sticky up top

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.5 (Microsoft Windows; PPC; Opera Mobi/17753; U; en))

In my experiance, what you discribe is NOT normal...I have had my TP for over a year now and I just had to Hard reset for the first time and that was because I screwed something up...As for soft resets, it is normal to have to do once in a while but not as often as I had to do with my old 6700...I would seriously consider returning it fr a replacment! Have you updated it to the latest Sprint Updates, because they did make a diference.
Good Luck,

That is fairly normal from what I remember, but it has been so long since I have been on sprints stock rom. Once you flash you won't even consider going back to stock (the only reason why you would is when you bring it in for repair/replacement).

The soft resets are somewhat normal. The Hard resets are not normal.

Have you updated to the latest stock rom released in the past month or so? It is FAR better then the one the TP shipped with.

Re: New to smart phones: TP is 1st - these things "normal"?

I have had mine for about 8 months with stock, and I've had to hard-reset it maybe twice, but that's because I messed it up, not because of the phone. As for soft-resets, it is a computer, and it does lock up sometimes, but once a day is a bit much. I go for a while without resetting. You may try, as they said, updating to the latest stock rom, or possibly hard-resetting, and not installing anything (that's where I had the mess-up), then, if it works, add 1 program at a time and use it for a while before going to the next. This is annoying, but not all programs behave, and not all play well with each other.

Re: New to smart phones: TP is 1st - these things "normal"?

Snipper,
Like I said above, I have had my TP for a bit over a year, and like you until this last week I used it with the "Stock Sprint Rom" with the updates installed. But I have to tell you, I have flashed several Customs to my TP in the past week and I would NEVER go back to a stock rom again....the good custom roms are WAY smoother, leaner with all the "BloatWare" removed, and the "Eye Candy" in some of them are awesome! So comming from someone that was "Used to" using the phone Stock, I came down to 2 Roms that I really liked..."So Far"

Mighty Rom 6 - Is a really fast Clean rom that does not have a lot of extra programs installed on it, I believe(but dont quote me) that it is based on the WM6.5 version with The original Touch Flo 3D, which is what is on the stock TP.

Psyki Rom - This is the rom I have settled with for now, It is really fast, is based on the WM6.5 and is running Gen. Y manilla and TouchFlo 3D Version 2.1, which is an updated TF3D which has some REALLY nice features...Me being new to TF3D2 I am not sure how many of the features in this rom are TF3D2 features and how many are Psyki's features, but some of them are....Adding custom backgrounds to all Tabs by going to "Change Background" in settings, The "All Programs" gives you Icons 4 rows accross Instead of the Strait List you are used to, that you have to scroll forever to get to the end...and many more!
If you do have to get a new TP I would suggest you use it Stock for a couple weeks to make sure it is good.....THEN Unlock it and Flash a custom to it....You will NOT regret it!

Good Luck,
0Gravity

Re: New to smart phones: TP is 1st - these things "normal"?

I feel so stupid asking this because by themselves, I know what each means. But in terms of phones, what is the difference between a firmware, a ROM, and an Operating System. I assume Operating System is like Windows Mobile. Do you install a OS ontop of a ROM? Ive been reading and searching but these terms are used all the time I'm kind of lost.

Thanks alot, so many forums you try to learn new stuff and everyone shouts "ZOMG USE SEARCH OR READ N00B!" but when you have no idea where to start, it can be confusing. Ill give this a try! Thanks again.
