Strange.
Usually, the "press the spacebar hard" trick is to help re-seat the physical keyboard ribbon which is located directly below it [see: here]. I can't imagine a single software/firmware reason for messing with the spacebar while the battery is out, so really the ROM you're using won't matter when doing this trick.
